Crystal Steel Fabricators, Inc. has an open receiving position in our Federalsburg, MD location. The candidate will be responsible for verifying and scheduling outgoing and incoming shipments. The Fabrication Shop Structural Steel Receiving Supervisor manages the safe intake, rigorous quality inspection, and meticulous organization of all incoming raw steel materials (beams, plates, channels, tubing) into the fabrication facility. Operating within a high-volume shop environment, this role serves as the first line of defense against material defects, ensuring that all raw inventory is correctly tracked by heat number and Material Test Report (MTR) before it hits the cutting, welding, and assembly lines.

Shop-Specific Responsibilities Inbound Yard Management:

Direct the safe offloading of flatbeds and railcars carrying multi-ton raw steel sections using overhead gantry cranes, magnetic lifts, and heavy forklifts.

MTR & Traceability Verification:

Immediately review, log, and match Material Test Reports (MTRs) and mill test certifications with physical heat numbers stamped on the steel to guarantee 100% material traceability.

Pre-Fabrication Quality Control:

Conduct physical inspections of incoming raw steel for mill defects, camber/sweep issues, surface rust, or transit damage before releasing materials to production.

Production Line Staging:

Coordinate closely with the Shop Foreman and Production Scheduler to organize and stage materials in the yard or raw storage bays, minimizing material handling times for the processing teams (saw, plasma, CNC).

Inventory Allocation:

Utilize shop ERP/inventory software (e.g., Tekla PowerFab/FabSuite, ProNest, or standard ERPs) to update inventory levels, track structural drops/remnants, and log raw material processing allocations.

Industrial Safety Leadership:

Enforce strict shop safety protocols, proper rigging procedures, and crane safety compliance in a high-risk, moving machinery environment. Applicant Qualifications Experience & Education Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a structural steel fabrication shop, steel service center, or heavy industrial steel warehouse. High school diploma required; a degree or certificate in Industrial Management , Supply Chain , or a related technical field is a plus.

Technical & Soft Skills Blueprint & Cut-List Literacy:

Advanced ability to read structural shop drawings, piece marks, and mill bills of materials.

Material Identification:

Deep knowledge of structural shapes (W-beams, HSS, channels, angles), steel grades (A36, A572, A992), and mill tolerances.

Precision Logistics:

Exceptional organization skills required to maintain a lean, orderly raw material yard feeding a fast-paced production floor. Certifications & Licenses OSHA 30 General Industry or Construction Certification (Required). Certified Operator for Overhead Bridge/Gantry Cranes and Heavy Forklifts (Required). AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Visual Inspection (VT) familiarity is a major asset but not strictly required.
