POSITION SUMMARY
The Shift Supervisor leads daily production activities for powder coating operators, pre-treatment workers, and packaging staff. This position coordinates employees and production priorities to meet shipping goals while supporting product quality, equipment reliability, workplace safety, inventory needs, and effective communication with management and Human Resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct daily activities of powder coating operators, pre-treatment workers, and packaging staff; assign work based on production and shipping priorities.
- Train and guide new employees on assigned equipment, work procedures, quality expectations, and applicable safety rules.
- Monitor production flow, including line speed, cure oven temperatures, and part hanging, and respond to conditions that may affect production.
- Inspect finished parts for coating thickness, adhesion, and finish quality; address or escalate defects such as runs, thin spots, or contamination.
- Oversee routine maintenance of powder spray guns, recovery booths, wash systems, and ovens; report major equipment failures.
- Enforce applicable safety rules and required PPE and ensure safe handling of chemicals used in the department.
- Track powder, hooks, masking supplies, and cleaning chemicals; communicate or initiate replenishment before supplies run low.
- Document employee attendance, performance, conduct, or safety concerns when appropriate and refer matters requiring HR or management action.
- Keep management informed of significant production, quality, safety, staffing, or equipment concerns.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Three to five years of hands-on powder coating or industrial painting experience.
- One to two years of leadership, team-lead, or lead-hand experience.
- Strong working knowledge of metal pre-treatment, powder application techniques, and oven cure cycles.
- Ability to troubleshoot powder guns and reclaim systems and to read production blueprints or work orders.
- Ability to communicate instructions clearly, organize work, solve problems, and lead employees during the shift.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand for extended shifts and work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform the standing, walking, bending, reaching, and other physical activity associated with production supervision.
