Assist Utility Fitters with a variety of skilled utility maintenance and repair duties associated with a water distribution system, wastewater collection system and a heat distribution system. This entry-level position is intended to serve as a developmental pathway to the Utility Fitter position through on-the-job training, hands-on experience, and progressive skill development. Incumbents are required to obtain and advance through the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection certification levels demonstrating increasing proficiency and responsibility in utility system operations and maintenance.Starting Wage:
$32.798 per hour This is an in-person position located at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a temporary position for up to 500 hours. What you will do Assist Utility Fitters in performing preventive and corrective maintenance on the water distribution, wastewater collection, and heat distribution systems. Assist Utility Fitters with operational activities on the water distribution, wastewater collection, and heat distribution systems, including flushing, thawing or unblocking, system shutdowns and turn-ons, hydrant flushing and flow testing, and water and wastewater sampling. Assist with inspections of water distribution, wastewater collection, and steam distribution systems. Perform general labor and support activities associated with the installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of utility infrastructure under the direction of a Utility Fitter. Maintain the grounds surrounding utility property to include lawn maintenance, refuse collection, and snow removal. Perform duties as fire and confined space watch for Utility Fitters working in such areas. Working in confined spaces may be required when assisting utility fitters with operational and maintenance activities. Custodial and maintenance duties for fleet vehicles and equipment. (i.e., washing and cleaning of vehicles and equipment) Participate in the Loss Prevention System (LPS). Progressively develop the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to perform Utility Fitter duties independently, including obtaining and maintaining required ADEC Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection certifications. Conditions of Employment Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent Required Vocational program related to the industry. Preferred 2 years Experience working in an environment that utilizes tools and equipment related to the operation and maintenance of water, wastewater, and distributed heat systems. Required Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely use tools, and equipment related to the operation and maintenance of water, wastewater, and distributed heat systems. (required proficiency) Ability to obtain and maintain Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection certifications within established timeframes and progressively advance certification levels. (required proficiency) Ability to learn the use of the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). (required proficiency) Ability to effectively communicate in writing, in person, and over the phone. (required proficiency) Ability to work effectively as part of a team, while demonstrating initiative, dependability, and a willingness to learn. (required proficiency) Ability to learn the operation of utility maintenance equipment and vehicles. (required proficiency) Demonstrated commitment to professional development and progression toward independently performing Utility Fitter duties. (required proficiency) ADEC Provisional certifications (WD and WWC) within 1 year. Required and ADEC Level I certifications (WD and WWC) within 2 years.
