Position Summary The Landfill Waste Sorter is responsible for manually sorting recyclable and reusable materials from municipal solid waste at a landfill or transfer station. This position helps ensure recyclable materials are recovered while maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Employees must follow all safety procedures and environmental regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Sort recyclable materials from incoming waste streams by hand. Remove non-conforming or hazardous materials and notify a supervisor when necessary. Separate materials such as cardboard, plastics, metals, wood, and other recyclable items. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Assist with housekeeping duties around the sorting area and landfill as assigned. Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, or incidents promptly. Work effectively with team members and supervisors to maintain productivity. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred but not required. Previous experience in waste management, recycling, general labor, or construction is a plus. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Dependable with a strong work ethic. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8-12-hour shifts). Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Repetitive bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and odors. Ability to wear required PPE, including safety vest, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection. Work Environment Outdoor landfill or transfer station environment. Exposure to dust, noise, odors, and moving equipment. Regular interaction with heavy machinery, trucks, and loaders. Overtime and weekend work may be required based on operational needs.
