This is a non-exempt position with an hourly wage based on qualifications and experience. The Street Sanitation Laborer is responsible for the collection, transportation, and proper disposal of residential, commercial, and public-area waste. This position plays a key role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of city streets, alleys, and public rights-of-way. The Sanitation Laborer may also provide limited support to the Street Department as needed.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect and dispose of residential, commercial, and municipal trash in accordance with city schedules and safety standards.
- Operate and ride on refuse collection vehicles and assist with bulk item pickup and special collection routes.
- Load, unload, and properly dispose of waste, recyclables, and debris at designated facilities.
- Maintain cleanliness of streets, alleys, sidewalks, and public rights-of-way by removing litter, debris, and illegal dumping.
- Assist with cleanup efforts following community events, storms, or emergency situations.
- Operate basic equipment such as trash trucks, dump trucks, compactors, and street sweepers as assigned.
- Perform routine inspections and basic upkeep of sanitation equipment and vehicles; report maintenance issues promptly.
- Follow all safety procedures related to waste handling, traffic awareness, and equipment operation.
- Set up and remove safety cones or barricades to ensure safe trash collection operations.
- Complete daily route logs, disposal records, and related documentation.
- Provide limited assistance with snow and ice removal or other public works activities when required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within a designated time frame; the City will provide assistance and support for CDL training and testing.
- Experience in street maintenance, construction, sanitation, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience in sanitation, waste collection, or public works is preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
