Solid Waste Operator

The City of Norfolk is seeking a reliable and hardworking individual to join our team as a Solid Waste Operator. This position performs semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the City's Waste Transfer Station and plays a key role in ensuring safe and efficient waste handling. Key Responsibilities Supervise and assist with inspection of incoming waste to ensure compliance with landfill regulations Operate computerized truck scales for weighing materials from municipal, commercial, and public users Operate heavy equipment including hydraulic boom, pay loader, skid steer, and tractors Assist with loading, compacting, and transporting waste to the landfill Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on trucks, trailers, and equipment Maintain facility cleanliness, including litter control, mowing, and snow removal Enforce safety rules and site regulations Assist customers with unloading, hazardous waste, and general inquiries Support operations of the animal crematory as needed Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Valid Nebraska Driver's License required Ability to obtain a Nebraska Class "A" CDL with required endorsements within six months of hire Experience operating heavy equipment and performing mechanical maintenance preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of waste transfer operations, equipment, and safety practices Ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate a variety of equipment and tools Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team
