Job Description

Perform a wide variety of duties in support of the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill including operating light equipment, inspecting loads and providing directions to customers at the landfill and drop-off sites regarding where to properly dispose of loads. We are looking for a friendly and helpful person to join our team. You will welcome customers, give them direction for item disposal and waste diversion, and support the landfill operations team. 1. Inspect incoming loads to determine proper classification of cargo and direct landfill customers to appropriate dumping locations. 2. Provide information and guidance regarding landfill policies and procedures to landfill customers. 3. Provide effective customer service with internal and external customers, including City employees, vendors, and citizens. 4. Help direct work of temporary employees assigned to assist in public drop-off sites. 5. Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of landfill services offering process improvement suggestions and participating as an effective member of the work team. 6. Ensure accurate records. 7. Perform basic maintenance and cleaning duties using light construction and maintenance equipment. 8. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals or shoveling sidewalks. 9. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position. Graduation from high school or GED certification with a minimum of one (1) year experience in customer service; or any such combination of experience, education, or training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority. Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver's license. Knowledge in grounds and facility maintenance. Possess mechanical aptitude skills. Possess strong oral, interpersonal and written communication skills. Possess strong customer service skills with the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Ability to take initiative and work under minimal supervision. Ability to make situational judgments when dealing with employees and the public. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of operating light construction and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of and ability to use computer and business software applications. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences.
