Job Description
The Cardiac Cath/Special Procedures Technologist assists in the preparation and provision of care for adult and geriatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and/or radiographic procedures. He/she is responsible for the operation of radiographic equipment as well as able to provide technical assistance (scrub) to the physician during a procedure. He/she may function as a sub-circulator under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. EducationAssociate Degree or 2 years of college courseworkExperienceOne year of related experience. - Assists with patient care, under the direction of the RN/Physician including respecting the right of patients to refuse or alter care, coordinating care with other departments, demonstrating competency in administering contrast agents, effectively operating specialized equipment.
- Attitude and actions are indicative of a role model whose conduct projects a positive and supportive image of co-workers, physicians, and the hospital.
- Demonstrates competency in performing the following procedural roles: scrub, monitor, sub-circulator under direction of RN Physician, operating x-ray equipment, pre post procedural care, mapping and knowledge of intracardiac structures, and transferring burning discs for patient studies being transferred to other facilities.
- Demonstrates cost-effective practices in the use of time by seeking additional work during slow times or helping other departments when needed, supplies by assisting with par levels and checking expiration dates, equipment, etc.
- Responsible for team responsibilities including attendance policy, call rotation after orientation, attending staff meetings, participating in PI program, functions as a team member to assure patient care is provided, offer assistance to other team members, serves as preceptor to new special procedures technologists, and acts as a resource to RN and Physicians in areas of expertise.
- Demonstrates behaviors necessary for age-specific care including communicating effectively and appropriately using correct terminology, understanding the range of treatment and technique relevant to the patient's age, educating the patient and family about the procedure including documentation of such, and insuring that equipment is specific to age as well as meeting safety needs and providing for privacy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of hospital computer, scheduling of procedures, telephone/beeper system/protocol, patient charges, and procedure logs.
- Demonstrates maturity, professionalism and appropriate interpersonal skills when dealing with physicians, co-workers, patients, and members of other hospital departments and maintains confidentiality in dealing with departmental issues, etc.
- Participates in data collection, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care relevant to the patient's age and diagnosis under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/Physician and involves the patient and family in the treatment process when appropriate.
- Responsible for accurate documentation of data collected and care provided.
- Responsible for assisting RNs in documenting waste for medications in the Pyxis.
- Responsible for yearly duties in staff development including obtaining/maintaining BLS and ACLS, clinical/equipment competencies, Net Learning, Required in-service training, maintaining current registrations/certifications/licenses, participating in continuing education classes offered by the unit/hospital or supply company, and identifying areas of knowledge deficit and correcting the areas.
