Job Description
Role Overview:
The Certified Nursing Assistant is a paraprofessional member of the interdisciplinary team who provides compassionate personal care and support services to patients and families under the supervision of a registered nurse. The hospice aide helps meet patients' physical, emotional, and comfort needs, while observing and reporting changes in condition to promote quality, safety, and continuity of care.Core Responsibilities:
Providing personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and assistance with mobility, feeding, and toileting in a safe and respectful manner. Supporting patient comfort and dignity by assisting with positioning, skin care, range of motion exercises, and the use of assistive devices as directed by the nurse or therapist. Observing, recording, and reporting changes in the patient's condition, environment, or needs to the supervising nurse in a timely manner. Communicating effectively and respectfully with patients, families, caregivers, and the interdisciplinary team, while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries. Assisting with light household tasks, simple meal preparation, and other activities that contribute to the patient's well-being and safe environment. Promoting safety and infection control practices, including appropriate use of equipment and supplies. Participating in quality improvement activities and following agency policies, documentation standards, and professional conduct guidelines. Other duties as assigned.Basic Qualifications/Requirements:
Meets state certification and training requirements for hospice aides, including a minimum of 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training (with at least 16 hours completed prior to clinical training). At least 18 years of age. Current CPR certification. Demonstrated ability to document care provided. Understanding of the hospice philosophy and comfort with providing care to patients at end of life. Compassion, empathy, and respect for the needs of patients, families, and caregivers. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to remain calm in emotionally challenging situations. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.Job Limitations:
The hospice aide may not perform any task that is considered the practice of nursing under the Nurse Practice Act. This includes administering medications, taking physician orders, or performing sterile procedures.Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift, move, or assist patients up to x lbs using proper body mechanics or assistive devices. Standing and walking for extended periods during patient visits or clinical rounds. Ability to bend, kneel, or stoop as needed for patient care tasks. Sufficient visual and auditory ability to monitor patients and follow safety protocols. Manual dexterity to operate medical equipment or document care.Work Environment:
Patient homes, which may vary in size, layout, and accessibility. Clinical or office settings, including shared workspaces, facilities, or treatment areas. Interaction with patients, families, and caregivers in emotionally sensitive situations. Regular interaction with patients with serious or terminal illness. Potential exposure to infectious diseases and varying environmental conditions. Travel between patient locations, including driving. Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts depending on patient needs. Requires reliable transportation to patient homes and care sites.
