Job Description
Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Make a meaningful impact by supporting one student as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a school-based, contract role. Located near Vero Beach, FL, this opportunity is ideal for professionals passionate about empowering students with visual impairments to navigate their environments more independently. You'll provide specialized Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services for one student who already receives daily assistance from a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI). Your expertise will supplement these supports and focus on fostering the student's confidence, safety, and practical navigation skills throughout the school year.
Qualifications:
Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Experience working with visually impaired students in educational settings preferred Understanding of assessment and instructional strategies for O&M training Strong communication and collaboration skills to coordinate with a multidisciplinary team Ability to tailor interventions to individual student needsResponsibilities:
Deliver direct O&M instruction for approximately 30 minutes per week Assess the student's unique orientation and mobility needs within the school environment Collaborate with the on-site TVI and other school staff to ensure continuity of services Develop specific O&M objectives and document student progress Offer practical solutions and modifications to promote greater independence and inclusion for the student Share insights and recommendations with the educational team and family, as needed This position provides a manageable caseload, consistent weekly schedule, and the chance to make a significant impact on a student's educational journey.
