Job Description

Position Summary The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) / Emergency Department Technician provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department. This role supports efficient patient throughput, assists with clinical and non-clinical patient care activities, and promotes safe, compassionate, and timely care in accordance with hospital policies, EMTALA requirements, and applicable regulatory standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patient Care Support Assists with basic patient care activities including hygiene, toileting, feeding, ambulation, and repositioning. Obtains and documents vital signs, height, weight, pain scores, and other patient observations per policy. Performs point-of-care testing as delegated and competency validated. Assists nursing staff with splinting, wound care setup, dressing changes, specimen collection, and other procedures within scope. Applies cardiac monitor leads, pulse oximetry, non-invasive blood pressure cuffs, and other basic monitoring equipment. Performs 12-lead EKGs upon competency validation. Assists with patient transport within the facility and vehicles upon discharge. Emergency Department Operations Prepares rooms for incoming patients; ensures rooms are stocked, clean, and ready. Assists with patient triage flow by promptly rooming patients and obtaining initial vital signs. Supports trauma, stroke, code blue, and emergency response activities as directed. Maintains emergency equipment readiness, including stretcher checks, supply restocking, and crash cart checks as assigned. Assists in turnover and cleaning of rooms according to infection prevention standards.
Documentation / Communication
Accurately documents patient care tasks in the electronic medical record. Reports changes in patient condition immediately to the RN/Provider. Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, nurses, EMS, and ancillary staff.
Safety / Compliance
Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. Adheres to infection prevention, hand hygiene, and PPE protocols. Participates in emergency preparedness drills and department competencies. Maintains current certifications and competencies required for the role. Additional Duties May assist inpatient unit or other departments during low ED census as directed. Participates in departmental meetings, education, and quality improvement initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned. Education High School Diploma or GED required.
Licensure / Certification
Current Louisiana CNA certification required. Current BLS certification required upon hire. Handle With Care or de-escalation training preferred (if behavioral health patients seen in ED). Experience Prior Emergency Department, EMS, or acute care experience preferred. New CNAs accepted with demonstrated aptitude for emergency care. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced emergency environment. Basic understanding of emergency patient care principles. Ability to recognize and report changes in patient condition promptly. Ability to maintain professionalism during high-stress situations. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repositioning patients. Must be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Ability to respond rapidly during emergency situations.
