Job Description
Job Title:
Lathe Operator Job Description This role focuses on precision machining, transforming raw materials into accurate, high-quality components using both CNC and manual lathes. The Lathe Operator interprets detailed specifications and blueprints, performs light CNC programming and machine setup, and maintains a strong commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency throughout the production process. Responsibilities Review work orders, technical drawings, and blueprints using the shop computer to understand job requirements and specifications. Record job hours accurately and scan badges for time tracking in accordance with shop procedures. Perform light CNC programming as needed, including entering and adjusting basic machine codes. Set up tooling, fixtures, and workholding on CNC and manual lathes to prepare for production runs. Adjust machine settings such as speeds, feeds, and offsets to achieve precise dimensions and surface finishes. Operate CNC and manual lathes to fabricate precision parts from raw materials according to engineering specifications. Load raw materials into machines, secure workpieces properly, and conduct test runs to verify accuracy before full production. Inspect parts during and after machining using appropriate measuring tools to ensure they meet quality and dimensional standards. Identify and report defective materials, nonconforming parts, or equipment issues to the appropriate personnel. Maintain, clean, and organize machines, tools, and the work area to support safe and efficient operations. Follow all safety procedures while working near moving mechanical parts, loud machinery, and industrial equipment. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to clarify assignments, resolve machining issues, and optimize production flow. Essential Skills Technical school accreditation or completion of a skilled trades program and/or 2-4 years of experience operating CNC mills, lathes, and manual machines. Solid understanding of machining processes and techniques, including turning and milling operations. Ability to read and interpret technical documents, engineering drawings, and blueprints. Proficiency in operating CNC and manual lathes to produce precision components. Ability to use shop computers for reviewing work orders, blueprints, and recording job data. Strong communication skills to understand and follow assignments delivered electronically, in writing, or verbally. Attention to detail with practical knowledge of machinery operation, setup, and basic maintenance. Problem-solving skills for troubleshooting equipment issues and resolving machining challenges. Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform occasional walking, bending, stooping, or kneeling. Frequent use of hand and finger dexterity for handling tools, controls, and small components. Ability to safely lift, push, or carry items over 50 pounds as required by the role. Strong verbal communication and hearing ability to work safely around machines and follow instructions. Visual acuity sufficient for operating equipment, reading technical data, and using shop computers. Comfort working near moving mechanical parts, with tolerance for exposure to fumes such as mineral spirits and cleaning solutions. Ability to work effectively in environments with loud noise from machine operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to perform light CNC programming, including basic program edits and adjustments, is a significant plus. Experience with Haas equipment, blueprint reading, and spiral or complex setups is highly beneficial. Familiarity with lathe machines, machining centers, mills, and related shop equipment. Experience participating in on-site interviews and production floor walk-throughs, including answering technical questions about setups, programming, and machine operation. Demonstrated reliability in time tracking and adherence to production schedules. Strong commitment to safety practices and maintaining a clean, organized work area. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position operates on a 2nd shift schedule, typically from 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM, on a modern and well-maintained production floor with high cleanliness standards. Team members regularly use shop computers to access blueprints and work orders and handle tools and materials throughout the shift. The role requires standing for extended periods, occasional walking, bending, stooping, or kneeling, and safely lifting or carrying items over 50 pounds. Employees may encounter fumes from mineral spirits and cleaning solutions and must follow all safety protocols, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment and adherence to shop safety guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Marlboro, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $62400.00/yr.
