Job Description

Contemporary Music Director St. John's Lutheran Church (ELCA) Bennington, Nebraska St. John's Lutheran Church (ELCA) has a long history of quality worship. Worship is the focus. Music is how we lead people into it. At St. John's, both services matter-the traditional (8:30 a.m.) and the contemporary (10:30 a.m.). During the summer, we have one service at 9:30 a.m. Different styles, same expectation: people should be engaged, singing, and connected. We are looking to fill the contemporary worship leader position with a person who is dedicated in faith and possesses the skill and passion to lead our talented worship team. This person must also have experience playing the piano/keyboard. Responsibilities include
  • Lead weekly worship team practice with volunteer musicians (bass guitar and drummer) and volunteer singers.
  • Collaborate with the Music Committee (Pastor and the Music Director) to offer guidance on music selection and themes throughout the year.
  • Collaborate with specialized music groups such as instrumentalists, youth groups, and vocal ensembles to enhance worship at the contemporary service.
  • Work with the Music Committee to establish a schedule of who will lead/alternate music for the summer services. (This allows both music directors to have some time off during the summer.) What we're looking for
  • Strong piano/keyboard skills
  • Experience leading worship in a contemporary setting
  • Ability to lead volunteers and raise the level of the team over time
  • Clear perspective on how music drives engagement in worship
  • Singing ability is a plus, not required Time commitment
  • Sunday Mornings, approximately 2.5 hours for rehearsals and contemporary service. And approximately 2 hours every week to collaborate with the Music Committee.
  • Weekly rehearsal and planning time (5 hours total per week) Very flexible hours during the week. Other details

This service includes old and new music from various genres and styles. We can play newly released music or older "contemporary" music that aligns with the service's intent. The purpose is to guide those who worship in a singable faith with energy and life.
