SECONDARY COSMETOLOGY TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE
: Secondary Cosmetology TeacherSUPERVISES
: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.JOB GOAL
To provide high-quality instruction in cosmetology theory and practical applications while preparing students to meet Alabama cosmetology standards, career readiness indicators, industry expectations, and employability competencies. The Cosmetology Teacher is responsible for delivering classroom and laboratory instruction in hair care, skin care, nail technology, sanitation, safety, chemical services, customer relations, and salon management while maintaining compliance with Alabama Career Technical Education requirements and Alabama Board of Cosmetology regulations.QUALIFICATIONS
: Valid Alabama Teacher Certificate in Career and Technical Education OR eligibility to obtain certification. Valid Alabama Cosmetology Instructor License. Current Alabama Cosmetology License. Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent as required by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology. Minimum work experience requirements as established by the Alabama State Department of Education and Alabama Board of Cosmetology. Demonstrated knowledge of cosmetology industry standards, instructional practices, and salon operations. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.REPORTS TO

To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Responsibilities:
Provide classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction aligned with Alabama CTE Cosmetology Course of Study standards. Develop and implement lesson plans that incorporate theory, demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and real-world applications.Teach competencies related to:
Haircutting and styling Chemical services Hair coloring Shampooing and scalp treatments Skin care and esthetics Nail technology Safety and sanitation procedures Infection control Professional ethics Salon management and entrepreneurship Customer service and communication skills Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs. Utilize technology and industry-based instructional strategies to enhance learning experiences. Prepare students for Alabama cosmetology licensure requirements and career readiness assessments.Career & Technical Education Responsibilities:
Maintain compliance with Alabama Career and Technical Education policies, procedures, and program standards. Maintain accurate documentation of student competencies, instructional hours, and certification progress. Assist students with career exploration, employability skills, resumes, portfolios, internships, and postsecondary planning. Coordinate work-based learning opportunities and community partnerships when applicable. Promote CTSO participation (FCCLA, SkillsUSA, or other approved student organizations). Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, safety standards, and cosmetology practices. Any other duties & responsibilities as assigned by the School Principal and/or designee.Laboratory & Safety Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe, clean, sanitary, and organized cosmetology laboratory/salon environment. Ensure proper use and storage of chemicals, tools, and equipment. Enforce sanitation, infection control, and safety procedures in accordance with Alabama Board of Cosmetology guidelines. Conduct routine inventory and maintain supplies and equipment. Report maintenance, repair, and safety concerns promptly.Student Management & Professional Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain appropriate classroom management procedures conducive to learning. Foster positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders. Monitor student attendance, performance, and professional conduct. Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress. Attend faculty meetings, professional development, CTE trainings, and school functions. Participate in curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned by administration.QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Valid Alabama Teacher Certificate in Career and Technical Education OR eligibility to obtain certification. Valid Alabama Cosmetology Instructor License. Current Alabama Cosmetology License. Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent as required by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology. Minimum work experience requirements as established by the Alabama State Department of Education and Alabama Board of Cosmetology. Demonstrated knowledge of cosmetology industry standards, instructional practices, and salon operations. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Cosmetology, Career & Technical Education, Education, or related field. Prior teaching or training experience. Experience working with secondary students in grades 9-12. Experience with student organizations, work-based learning, and industry partnerships. Knowledge of Alabama CTE Course of Study and Career Readiness Indicators.CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet Alabama Career and Technical Education certification requirements for cosmetology instruction, including verification of a valid Alabama Cosmetology Instructor License. Instructor licensure requirements established by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering include: Valid cosmetology license Completion of approved instructor training requirements Applicable professional experience and examination requirementsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cosmetology theory, techniques, and safety procedures Ability to supervise students in a laboratory/salon environment Strong classroom management and instructional delivery skills Ability to integrate academic and technical standards Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, parents, and community partners Ability to motivate and mentor students toward career successPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Standing for extended periods of time Demonstrating cosmetology procedures and techniques Lifting and moving salon equipment and supplies as needed Manual dexterity sufficient to operate cosmetology tools and equipmentWORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment includes both classroom and laboratory/salon settings with exposure to chemicals, salon equipment, and standard cosmetology tools. Appropriate safety procedures and professional standards must be followed at all times.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full-Time | 9.5 Month Contract Salary based on the approved Phenix City Board of Education Salary Schedule, experience, certifications, and credentials.EVALUATION
