To develop in each pupil an appreciation of theatre arts as part of general culture; to teach techniques of dramatic expression and performance; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of theatre; and to develop knowledge and skills in acting, stage production, technical theatre, and dramatic interpretation.QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Theatre Arts, Drama, English Language Arts, or a closely related teaching field with appropriate endorsement. Demonstrate knowledge of theatre arts instruction, stage performance, directing, and technical theatre production. Ability to plan and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction that promotes creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills. Strong classroom management and organizational skills with the ability to maintain a positive and productive learning environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and community partners. Experience in directing theatrical productions, student performances, or extracurricular arts activities preferred. Knowledge of stagecraft, lighting, sound, costumes, set design, and theatre safety procedures preferred. Effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and commitment to student achievement and fine arts education. To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach skills in drama and theatre arts utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district. Plan a balanced theatre arts program and organize daily class time so that rehearsal, instruction, performance preparation, and production activities can be accomplished within the allotted time. Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Utilize a variety of dramatic literature and performance materials, including traditional and contemporary works appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils. Control the storage and use of school-owned property and theatre equipment. Instruct pupils in the use, care, and safe operation of theatre equipment, props, costumes, sound equipment, lighting systems, and stage materials. Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports. Control assigned district-owned theatre equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom, rehearsal, and performance settings. Evaluate, select, and requisition scripts, instructional aids, equipment, costumes, props, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records. Maintain professional competence through inservice education activities. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district. Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilize appropriate state standards, guides, task lists, etc. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation. Assist the principal in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances. Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provide nine-week and mid-nine-week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least bi-weekly progress. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others. Provide for his/her own professional growth by attending PCS professional development training. Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours. Budget funds for theatre equipment, costumes, scripts, and supplies and keep appropriate records. Assist administration in maintaining and supervising the use of theatre equipment, costumes, props, and stage facilities. Maintain and implement written control policies regarding such materials. Assist the administration with and/or supervise entry and exit of students while providing supervision of common areas as assigned. Lead the supervision of the total school theatre/drama program. As directed by, and in conjunction with the principal, establish and maintain the annual theatre/drama budget at his/her school. Work closely with theatre booster organizations and attend booster functions as appropriate. After consultation with and approval by the school principal, schedule all drama performances, rehearsals, productions, and related events. Represent his/her school at appropriate local, state, and regional theatre events, competitions, festivals, and performances. Assist in scheduling all theatre-related transportation and securing chaperones for related trips and performances. Lead in writing, publishing, and disseminating an annual theatre handbook consisting of rules, regulations, and operating procedures of the theatre program. Lead in the preparation and readiness of theatre performance spaces, backstage areas, and rehearsal areas. Assume responsibility at his/her school for ensuring that each student participant has proper permission forms on file. Assume other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and student outcomes. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students. In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school. Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress, or lack of progress - through school system devices. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, scripts, equipment, and other instructional materials which provide students with the best learning opportunities. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum. Lead in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports in a timely manner. Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, clean, safe, and conducive to learning. Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal, Designee and/ or Superintendent.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment related to theatre arts instruction. Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned. Good knowledge of the school's program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to move around the room and stage areas in order to monitor student work and behavior. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and peers. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community members; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
