SECONDARY CTE CARPENTRY TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE
Secondary CTE Carpentry TeacherSUPERVISES
Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.JOB GOAL
To provide high-quality classroom, laboratory, and shop instruction in carpentry and construction trades aligned with Alabama Career and Technical Education standards and industry expectations while preparing students for workforce readiness, postsecondary training, industry credentials, and careers in construction-related fields. The Carpentry Teacher will provide instruction in residential and commercial construction principles, blueprint reading, framing, woodworking, tool safety, building materials, construction mathematics, and employability competencies.QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Alabama Teacher Certificate in Career and Technical Education OR eligibility to obtain certification. Minimum work experience requirements as established by the Alabama State Department of Education for Trade & Industrial Education certification. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in carpentry, construction trades, or related field. Knowledge of construction safety standards and building practices. Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills. Ability to supervise students in a laboratory/shop environment.REPORTS TO

To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Responsibilities:
Develop and implement instructional lessons aligned to Alabama CTE Construction and Carpentry Course of Study standards. Provide classroom, laboratory, and hands-on shop instruction in: Basic carpentry skills Construction safety Blueprint reading Measuring and layout Framing techniques Roofing systems Flooring systems Wall and ceiling construction Concrete and foundation basics Cabinetry and woodworking Power tool and hand tool operation Construction mathematics Building materials and estimating Workplace readiness and employability skills Utilize project-based learning and real-world construction applications. Integrate academic concepts such as mathematics, reading, and technical writing into instruction. Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and student needs. Prepare students for industry-recognized credentials and career readiness assessments when applicable. Utilize instructional technology and industry-based software when appropriate.Career & Technical Education Responsibilities:
Maintain compliance with Alabama Career and Technical Education program requirements and standards. Maintain accurate records of student competencies, certifications, safety training, and instructional progress. Support student participation in CTSOs such as SkillsUSA and other career-related leadership organizations. Coordinate work-based learning experiences, apprenticeships, internships, and community partnerships when applicable. Promote career exploration and workforce readiness. Assist students in developing resumes, portfolios, interview skills, and employability competencies. Maintain current knowledge of construction industry trends, innovations, safety regulations, and best practices.Laboratory, Shop, & Safety Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and professional construction lab/shop environment. Enforce all OSHA, school system, and CTE safety standards and procedures. Instruct and monitor students in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, machinery, and construction equipment. Conduct routine safety inspections and equipment checks. Maintain inventory and accountability for tools, supplies, and materials. Report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, or damaged equipment immediately. Ensure students properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).Student Management & Professional Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain effective classroom and shop management procedures. Foster positive relationships with students, faculty, parents, and community stakeholders. Monitor student attendance, progress, behavior, and professional conduct. Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student achievement and concerns. Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning, district trainings, and school activities. Collaborate with administrators, counselors, CTE staff, and business/industry partners. Participate in curriculum review, program improvement initiatives, and accreditation activities. Perform other duties as assigned by the administration and/or designee.QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:

Associate's degree or higher in Construction Technology, Carpentry, Industrial Education, Building Science, or related field. Industry certifications related to carpentry, construction, OSHA safety, NCCER, or related fields. Prior teaching, training, apprenticeship, or supervisory experience. Experience working with secondary students in grades 9-12. Experience with project-based instruction and workforce development initiatives.CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet Alabama Career and Technical Education certification requirements for Trade and Industrial Education programs as established by the Alabama State Department of Education. Industry credentialing and/or work experience verification may be required in accordance with Alabama CTE standards and certification guidelines.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of residential and commercial construction principles Knowledge of carpentry tools, materials, equipment, and safety procedures Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents Strong instructional delivery and classroom/shop management skills Ability to supervise students in hands-on learning environments Ability to establish positive working relationships with stakeholders Ability to motivate students toward career and workforce success Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and effective communicationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Standing and walking for extended periods of time Demonstrating construction and carpentry techniques Lifting, carrying, and moving construction materials, tools, and equipment Operating tools and machinery safely Ability to work in indoor and outdoor instructional settings when applicableWORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in classroom, laboratory/shop, and occasional outdoor instructional environments involving construction materials, tools, machinery, dust, noise, and equipment commonly associated with carpentry and construction programs. Adherence to safety standards and procedures is required at all times.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full-Time | 9.5 Month Contract Salary based on the approved Phenix City Board of Education Salary Schedule, experience, certifications, and credentials.EVALUATION
