Develops and directs systems for controlling the introduction of contraband, perimeter control, physical plant searches, and plant and sanitation inspections. Assists in the development of Institutional Post Orders and Emergency Plans under the authority of the Warden. Develops and implements the security inspections of the complex and grounds. Coordinates and schedules interviewers of prospective employees and promotional applicants. Evaluates employees for the post assignments; recommends the selection of new employees through the chain of command. Conducts training sessions for supervisory and line personnel relative to Internal Management Policies and Procedures (IMPPs) and General Orders. Develops and conducts advanced training sessions. Ensures timely and appropriate evaluation of security personnel. Monitors the employment of contract employees within the complex and grounds regarding rules and regulations. Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, or public administration and three years of experience in the field of corrections, including at least one year of supervisory and administrative/management experience. Additional experience may be substituted for the required education as determined relevant by the agency.
Approved Substitution:
Completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in corrections, criminal justice, the social sciences or the behavioral sciences; three years of experience in corrections, criminal justice administration, law or a closely related field; and one year of supervisory experience. Up to two additional years of experience in corrections, criminal justice administration, law or a closely related field may be substituted for the education at the rate of one year of experience for 30 credit hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and institutional policies, procedures, administrative regulations, and operational memorandum. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation and the methods, procedures, and practices of controlling and supervising residents confined to a corrections institution. Knowledge of prison rules, regulations, practices, and internal management procedures and techniques and methods of counseling residents. Knowledge of modern concepts, principles, and practices related to the rehabilitation of criminal offenders. The ability to interact with residents and coworkers to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interpret and apply rules, regulations, and departmental and institutional policies and procedures. Ability to think and act quickly during an emergency; follow oral and written instructions; and plan, assign, and direct the work of others. Ability to supervise all operations and programs of an entire correctional institution as the officer-in-charge. Ability to maintain discipline among residents. Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate records, unit team, and work release activities. Ability to effectively analyze situations and to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with community service organizations, judicial officials, court service personnel, and local law enforcement officials. Selection Process:
Applicants selected for an interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior-based interview questions. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver's License.
