Job Description
The culinary curriculum is instrumental to the high-quality learning experience that MMUMS provides to children and families. We are looking for a competent culinary assistant to help with the preparation of meals and culinary programs for children ages 6 weeks through 15 years. These meals and programs are designed to build positive relationships with food through made-from-scratch, organic and vegetarian/vegan meals and snacks and are prepared fresh daily for the members of the school community. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working, reliable professional able to undertake a variety of cooking and food preparation tasks. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and organization with the ability to move and learn quickly and take direction from others (namely the Head of Food Program and Head of School). We are looking for someone with cooking experience, including strong knife skills and the ability to maintain a consistent schedule.
Job Duties Include:
Assisting the Head of Food Program with daily tasks related to the food program Preparing, plating, and serving two snacks and one lunch daily Dishwashing and cleaning (limited to the kitchen) Regular deep cleaning of the kitchen space Helping maintain records of inventory, food expiration, and proper storage Supporting plans for culinary events during the school day, such as cultural celebration meals Working directly with children to support culinary classes and food preparation tasks Providing assistance for family culinary events (quarterly) Adherence of Health Department and best-practices for safe and healthy food handling Requirements and Skills Experience working in the culinary world, with ability demonstrate appropriate behavior and language for a school setting Ability to collaborate with others and receive and respond to guidance from supervisors Basic food preparation and cooking skills; strong knife skills are preferred Full adherence to Virginia Department of Health best-practices for safe and healthy food handling Working knowledge of, and full compliance with food allergy accommodations Maintain trusting relationships with children, parents, and teachers in the school community Professional communication skills Physically able to perform job duties that involve being on your feet all day, regularly lifting up to 30 lbs, bend/squat often, navigating stairs and uneven terrain dailySchedule:
Full-time 8-hour shift (7 am- 3 pm) Monday to Friday, including most federal holidays (exceptions include Labor Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July) Occasional early evening events, such as child cooking classes and family events 6 full weeks of scheduled paid time off plus some paid holidays [Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving (3 days), Fourth of July] One day of Faculty Professional Development each month (time at work, without children) We rely on employees who are: Dependable•consistent attendance and maintain focus throughout the day Respectful•can acknowledge and respect the work of the child and cooperate with classroom teachers to support independence and child development without disruption to their work Adaptable/flexible•can manage frequent changes from day-to-day in response to changing needs of children and the school Detail-oriented•can manage small and large tasks with multiple moving parts Independent/self-starter•can manage time and tasks without regular supervision High stress tolerant•thrives in high-pressure and high-activity environment Calm and joyful demeanor around others, including children and adults Physically capable•ability to be on your feet for the majority of the day, lift and carry up to 30 lbs, bend/squat, navigate stairs and uneven terrain Employees are required, by law, to hold the following current certifications (may be obtained upon hiring) :
