POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodial Technician plays a vital role in supporting the YMCA's mission by ensuring clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities that foster a positive and welcoming environment for all members, staff, and guests. This hands-on position incorporates custodial services and light facility maintenance. This position requires the operation and transport of specialized cleaning equipment across multiple YMCA branches. The Custodial Technician upholds high standards of cleanliness, safety, and member service while working independently and as part of a team. In addition to daily custodial duties, this role provides leadership support within the custodial team and contributes to a culture of excellence, efficiency, and community care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform daily custodial duties including mopping, dusting, restroom sanitization, window washing, vacuuming, trash removal, and laundry services. Clean and sanitize fitness equipment and locker rooms; complete seasonal tasks such as snow removal and deep cleaning. Operate specialized motorized and non-motorized cleaning equipment; ensure safe transport and handling of equipment to multiple YMCA facilities using a trailer. Support and perform minor building maintenance and general facility repairs; assist with mechanical and system upkeep under supervision. Diagnose malfunctions in systems and take corrective action or notify proper personnel. Maintain exterior grounds by removing litter, organizing materials, and supporting landscape upkeep. Utilize work order systems to document maintenance and custodial activity. Maintain adequate inventory of custodial and maintenance supplies. Ensure all areas are secure during and after shift and report hazards, repairs, or safety concerns to leadership. Support department leadership in shift coordination, onboarding, and training of custodial staff. Promote and model YMCA values, mission, and legendary service at all times. Maintain compliance with safety standards, risk management protocols, and emergency procedures. Serve as a resource for safety and support audits and coaching of staff or vendors. Communicate effectively with branch staff and leadership to ensure high levels of support and operational consistency. Perform other duties as assigned to support overall branch and association facility goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum age of 21 required. High school diploma or GED; technical education or trade school preferred. Minimum 3 years of related custodial or facility maintenance experience required. Experience operating custodial and light maintenance equipment. Valid driver's license and clean motor vehicle record (MVR) required; must be able to safely tow and maneuver a trailer to transport cleaning equipment between locations. Ability to read and interpret safety instructions, maintenance manuals, and procedures. Must be able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to travel between YMCA branches within Lake County. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Computer literacy for using maintenance tracking systems is preferred. Completion of YMCA trainings such as New Leader Orientation, Listen First, and Service with Care within required timeframes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively. Must have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative. Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job responsibilities. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend. Ability to work with cleaning solvents and chemicals. Use hands and fingers, handle/use objects, tools and controls. Safely navigate ladders, confined spaces, roof tops and crawl spaces. Exposed to outdoor elements at times. Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times. Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties.
