In this role, you will serve as the senior accounting leader across a diverse portfolio of growing businesses and nonprofit organizations—including software, managed IT, transportation, healthcare, construction, and professional services. You will lead a team of accounting professionals providing outsourced accounting and fractional CFO services to clients that need sophisticated financial leadership without maintaining a full in-house finance department. What You Will Do Your work will center on three core areas: Own the Financial Reporting Lead monthly and annual close processes across your client portfolio. Review the team's work, resolve accounting issues, and ensure that every financial statement delivered to a client is accurate, timely, GAAP-compliant, and defensible. Build the Accounting Infrastructure Design and improve the systems that support reliable financial reporting, including internal controls, account reconciliations, workpapers, close calendars, accounting policies, and process documentation. Help convert engagement-specific practices into consistent, scalable firm methodologies that can withstand audit and due-diligence scrutiny. Advise Clients Work directly with business owners and executives to explain what their financial results mean, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and recommend practical actions. Several client engagements include fractional CFO responsibilities, including budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, performance analysis, and strategic planning.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Serve as the primary senior accounting contact for assigned clients and build trusted, long-term relationships. Lead, coach, and review the work of accountants and bookkeepers. Plan and execute new client implementations, special projects, and process-improvement initiatives across multiple states and international jurisdictions. Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes. Oversee the preparation and review of income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, and management reporting packages. Ensure that accounting records and financial statements comply with GAAP and established firm standards. Develop and maintain internal controls, account reconciliations, workpapers, close schedules, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures. Coordinate with ixternal tax professionals and review work relating to income, sales and use, payroll, and other direct and indirect taxes. Review payroll processes and employee benefit programs and recommend improvements when appropriate. Monitor client financial performance, investigate significant variances, and recommend corrective actions. Improve budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow planning, and financial reporting processes. Advise business owners and executives on accounting, operational, and financial matters. Train client personnel and internal team members and deliver presentations to management. Collaborate with the CEO/CFO and other firm leaders to establish priorities, allocate resources, and plan the Accounting Team's workload. Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of firmwide accounting methodologies and quality-control standards.
Required Qualifications :
Active CPA license. Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. At least five years of progressively responsible accounting experience. Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements. Experience managing monthly and annual close processes and preparing complete financial statements. Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online, Xero, or comparable cloud-based accounting systems. Demonstrated ability to review the work of others, identify accounting issues, and provide clear direction. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple client engagements, deadlines, and competing priorities. Confidence communicating directly with business owners and senior executives.
Preferred Qualifications :
Public accounting or audit experience, particularly for candidates seeking to transition into client accounting leadership and advisory work. Experience supervising accountants or bookkeepers in a multi-client environment. Exposure to income tax returns, indirect taxes, payroll, and employee benefit programs. Experience with outsourced accounting, client advisory services, or fractional CFO engagements. Experience developing internal controls, accounting policies, and standardized close procedures. Experience serving clients operating across multiple states or countries.
