Job Description

Promotional-only job: You must have permanent career status (cannot be in probationary status) as a City of Berkeley employee in order to be considered for this position. The City of Berkeley invites current employees to apply for the position of Customer Services Specialist III. Vacancies may be in the IT Department or the Finance Department. In the IT Department, you will work in the 311 Customer Service Call Center which provides a first point of contact for City services and delivers information to community members, businesses, and visitors on behalf of the City. In this role, you will have regular contact with the public, often with clientele who have complex problems or in situations involving complex or technical information. In the Finance Department, you will be responsible for assisting both the public and City staff in resolving complex problems referred by other staff. You will provide information about policies, rules, regulations or procedures by researching files and electronic databases for solutions. A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: Equivalent to graduation from high school and 3 years of general clerical experience which has included extensive customer service and public interaction, including complaint resolution. College level courses in general business subjects such as business practices, information technology, psychology and related subjects are highly desirable. Successful completion of classes in Customer Service Dispute/Conflict Resolution is desirable.

Multiple-Choice Written Exam:
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 9:00 a.m to 11:30a.m. ( subject to change) Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
