- Intermediate & Advanced Glass Fusing Center for Community Arts is currently seeking an experienced, professional glass artist to teach Intermediate and Advanced Glass Fusing classes as part of our established glass program in Walnut Creek.
Walnut Creek has a large and dedicated glass fusing community, including many long-time participants who have developed a high level of technical skill and artistic experience. We are seeking a teaching artist with deep expertise in fused glass who can build upon this strong foundation, introduce students to new techniques and approaches, and continue advancing the artistic and technical quality of the program. The ideal candidate will be a practicing glass artist with extensive knowledge of glass fusing processes, kiln operation and firing, studio practices, and advanced techniques. They should be equally comfortable supporting individual artistic development and leading a classroom of experienced makers. Our current glass instructors have helped develop and sustain this program for more than 30 years. We are looking for an artist who is excited to build upon that legacy while bringing their own expertise, artistic perspective, and new ideas to the next chapter of glass programming at Center for Community Arts. About Center for Community Arts For over 60 years, Center for Community Arts, a division of the City of Walnut Creek's Arts + Rec Department, has been a regional center for arts learning promoting new visions, supporting exploration, stimulating creative thought, and encouraging self-expression. We provide high-quality visual and performing arts instruction and educational experiences for participants of all ages and experience levels, from beginning students through advanced and professional-level artists. Key Duties Develop and teach engaging Intermediate and Advanced Glass Fusing curriculum that builds upon students' existing knowledge and technical abilities. Introduce new techniques, processes, materials, and approaches that encourage continued artistic and technical growth. Provide individualized instruction and guidance to experienced students with a range of artistic interests and goals. Manage the firing of student work, including determining appropriate firing schedules and overseeing kiln loading, firing, cooling, and unloading. Support the day-to-day management and organization of the glass fusing studio. Maintain and appropriately use studio tools, materials, kilns, and equipment. Help identify material, supply, equipment, and maintenance needs for the program. Maintain safe studio practices and provide students with appropriate instruction in the safe use of glass, tools and equipment. Work closely with Center for Community Arts staff to support the continued development and success of the glass program. Ideal Candidates Are highly experienced in glass fusing and kiln-formed glass, with advanced technical knowledge of the medium. Have extensive experience operating and managing glass kilns, including developing and troubleshooting firing schedules. Have a strong understanding of glass compatibility, firing processes, materials, tools, equipment, and studio safety. Are practicing glass artists with a strong body of work and demonstrated expertise in their craft. Have experience teaching intermediate and advanced adult students in a studio, classroom, or community arts setting. Are comfortable teaching students who already possess substantial knowledge and experience and can offer meaningful opportunities for continued growth. Can clearly communicate advanced technical concepts and creative processes. Encourage experimentation, artistic exploration, problem-solving, and the development of individual artistic voices. Are excellent communicators with strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Have a BA or MA in glass, studio art, or a related visual arts field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent professional experience. Hours and Compensation This is a contract teaching artist position. Compensation is based on a percentage split of the total course registration fees collected.
