Scenic Painter / Props Manager Qualifications High School Diploma One year of experience Experience or demonstrated ability in scenic painting, visual art, theatrical production, props, or related work Knowledge of scenic painting techniques, color mixing, textures, aging, faux finishes, and theatrical finishing preferred. Creative problem-solving skills to fabricate, alter, or repurpose items. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple production needs simultaneously. Research and source items while remaining mindful of production budgets. Available to work evenings and weekends when required by the production schedule. Position Summary The Scenic Painter / Props Manager is responsible for the painting, finishing, and dressing of scenic elements as well as the sourcing, creation, organization, and maintenance of props for Playhouse productions. This position works closely with the Director, Scenic Designer, Technical Director, and other production departments to ensure the visual elements of each production support the established artistic vision. Responsibilities Props Meet with the Director and production team to establish and maintain a complete prop list for each production. Review scripts and reference materials to identify all necessary props. Research and source props through Playhouse inventory, purchasing, borrowing, thrifting, or fabrication. Determine when props can be created in-house and coordinate fabrication as needed. Coordinate with Costumes, Hair & Makeup, Jewelry, Technical, and other departments when prop needs overlap. Have props prepared and organized as early in the rehearsal and production process as possible. Organize and maintain prop shelves, backstage prop areas, and storage spaces. Coordinate with prop volunteers and provide clear information regarding prop placement, scene needs, repairs, and replacements. Attend technical rehearsals as needed to identify and address last-minute prop needs. Strike productions and ensure borrowed items are promptly returned and Playhouse-owned props are returned to the appropriate storage areas. Track purchases, submit receipts, and work within the approved production budget. Receive approval before purchasing unusually expensive or specialty items. Scenic Painting & Set Dressing Meet with the Scenic Designer, Director, and Technical Director to establish colors, finishes, textures, and the overall visual style of each production. Coordinate with the Technical Director and Scenic Shop Lead to establish painting priorities and schedules. Complete base coating, scenic treatments, faux finishes, aging, distressing, texturing, and other specialty painting techniques as required by the design. Purchase and maintain paint, brushes, drop cloths, tape, spray paint, and other scenic painting supplies. Coordinate scenic painting schedules with Lighting and other departments sharing the stage and workspace. Supervise and coordinate scenic painting assistants and volunteers when needed. Maintain clean, organized, and safe painting work areas and properly care for painting tools and supplies. Work toward completing major scenic painting prior to technical rehearsals. Assist with set dressing by sourcing, preparing, placing, securing, and striking decorative scenic elements. Assist other production departments with artistic or visual projects when needed.
