Job Description
Treehouse Players Summer Theater Adventures Are you our next Art Director? Do you light up when you hand a kid a paintbrush and watch something unexpected happen? Are you the person who can walk into a space full of cardboard, craft supplies, paint, and bouncing 7-year-olds — and walk out with a backdrop that resembles the original design? Are you a teacher during the school year and you're looking for a fulfilling, collaborative, part-time summer job? Treehouse Players is a children's summer theater camp in Chester, CT where kids ages 5-10 dive deep into the creative process — acting, singing, dancing, and making art that brings a story to life on stage. The main goal is to help children find and use their voices. We do one story each summer, and we go all in. We're looking for an Art Director who gets that the process is the point — someone who can lead young artists with patience, vision, fun, and a high tolerance for mess. Session Dates Session 1: June 22
- July 3 Session 2: July 13
- 24 Session 3: July 27
- August 7 All three sessions preferred — we'll be flexible for the right person. M-F. Daily hours are flexible. Second Thursday performances run 5-8 pm. 30-40 hours per session. What you'll do
- This isn't just running a craft time — it's creating the visual world of the story.
You'll:
Collaborate with our Artistic Director to design scenery and sets that bring the story to life. Work alongside the campers to build those sets — using their ideas, their hands, and their imaginations. Develop, prep materials, and lead the creation of small art projects and crafts tailored to story's themes. Create an environment where every kid feels like an artist — not just the "good at art" ones. Keep the art space organized, the supply inventory stocked, and the budget on track. Ensure the space is safe, clean, and welcoming for every camper every day. You might be our person if… You have a strong background in visual arts and love sharing that knowledge with young people. You've worked with kids or youth in an educational, camp, or recreational setting — and genuinely enjoyed it. You're organized enough to manage materials and timelines, but flexible enough to follow campers' unexpected creative tangents. You communicate clearly and warmly — with kids, parents, and fellow staff alike. You have (or are willing to get) First Aid and CPR certification before the summer. Theater set design experience is a bonus — but enthusiasm for storytelling through art matters more. You have a Bachelor's Degree in a related field, but it's not required. Experience is just as important. You'll be celebrated for being… Calm under the chaos of kids with paint, creative, naturally warm with children and staff, resourceful when supplies run low, and genuinely excited about making art that ends up on a stage. Ready to apply? Reach out to Amy Forbes, Artistic Director — we'd love to hear about your art background and what excites you about working with kids.
