ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Communications Director sets the vision, creative direction, and strategy for how Rock Creek Church communicates across every channel. This full-time role reports to the Senior Director of Communications, leads the Communications team, and partners closely with ministry leaders and senior leadership to translate the church's mission and teaching calendar into clear, compelling communication.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Vision & Brand Strategy
  • Set and steward the overall communications vision, ensuring all output reflects the church's brand, voice, and mission
  • Own the brand standards, defining and protecting how Rock Creek looks, sounds, and feels across every channel
  • Lead the department in understanding and communicating to a 4,000-person weekend congregation across diverse demographics
  • Translate leadership's vision and teaching calendar into a cohesive seasonal communications strategy Creative Direction
  • Provide creative direction for all design, video, social, email, and print work produced by the department
  • Review and approve final creative deliverables before they go to print, air, or publish
  • Set the visual and narrative tone for each series, campaign, or season, giving the team a clear creative north star before work begins
  • Direct the Videographer on production style, storytelling approach, and content priorities Content & Channel Strategy
  • Own the strategy for all communications channels, including social media, email, website, in-service graphics, print, and signage
  • Determine what gets communicated, to whom, when, and through which channel
  • Stay current on platform trends, audience behavior, and best practices to keep communications effective and relevant
  • Evaluate new channels, tools, or platforms and make recommendations to leadership Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, develop, and support the communications team, including the Project Manager, Videographer, Admin, and any contractors or volunteers
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones and annual reviews, investing in each team member's professional growth
  • Cultivate a department culture of creativity, clarity, and collaboration
  • Make staffing recommendations to church leadership as the team and its workload evolve Ministry & Leadership Partnership
  • Serve as the primary communications partner to senior leadership, translating organizational priorities into communications action
  • Build trusted relationships with ministry leaders across the church, helping them communicate their work effectively
  • Serve as the voice of the communications department in staff meetings, leadership gatherings, and planning retreats
  • Advocate for realistic lead times, appropriate resources, and clear request processes across the staff Budget & Department Operations
  • Manage the communications department budget, allocating resources across personnel, software, vendors, and production
  • Make purchasing decisions for equipment, software, and services that support the team's work
  • Evaluate department effectiveness through key metrics such as engagement, reach, request volume, and turnaround times, and report to leadership
QUALIFICATIONS
Character & Culture Fit

  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to cast vision and inspire a creative team
  • High level of discretion and sound judgment representing the church's voice publicly Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or creative leadership, ideally in a church or nonprofit setting
  • Proven experience leading a creative team and managing department budgets
  • Strong understanding of brand strategy, content strategy, and multi-channel communications
  • Experience directing video, design, and social content production
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Design, or a related field preferred
  • Equivalent professional experience will be considered in place of a degree

WORK SCHEDULE & CLASSIFICATION
Classification Full-Time, Exempt Department Creative Arts Reports To Executive Pastor of Creative Arts Schedule Standard full-time schedule, Monday-Friday; additional hours may be needed during major campaigns, series launches, and seasonal productions (Easter, Christmas, fall kickoff) Interested in this role?
