Job Description

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the state's largest news organization, seeks an organized, ambitious newsroom leader and skilled journalist to help shape the daily journalism that informs Arkansas. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced editor to join our senior leadership team and help shape the future of a statewide newsroom committed to making a difference. Based in Little Rock, the assistant managing editor will play a central role in setting newsroom priorities, driving our biggest stories and ensuring our journalism is urgent and essential to readers. This leader should be equally comfortable sharpening an accountability story, planning coverage around a major news event and using audience data to understand how our journalism is performing. This job also offers the chance to live and work in a state with no shortage of important stories to tell. As Arkansas' capital and largest city, Little Rock puts you at the center of state government and politics while the Democrat-Gazette's statewide reach means your work extends into communities across Arkansas. Our assistant managing editor will emphasize high-impact journalism, comprehensive coverage planning, strong front-end editing and a sense of urgency. Working across all our desks, this editor will ensure the Democrat-Gazette delivers the state's most complete news report each day. We are looking for an editor with a record of outstanding news judgment, deep knowledge of the rudiments of reporting and proficiency in the use and application of metrics. Above all, we want an editor committed to excellence. Responsibilities Ensure effective planning of daily news coverage Apply strong news judgment in story selection and use of resources Closely monitor analytics and routinely assess performance Instill a sense of urgency Drive front-end editing to help us get the best stories Enforce sound journalistic standards in reporting and final editing Lead a digital-first mind set Qualifications Ten years of newsroom management experience Experienced in use of analytics Record of delivering high-quality journalism Organizational skill Effective communicator Fluent in AP style Knowledgeable about open government and media law We are looking exclusively for serious applicants with a record in our field.
