We empower under-resourced and at-promise youth (grades 1-12) through creative writing workshops and literacy programs. By guiding young people to write, edit, and publish their own books, we transform them into confident communicators, lifelong readers, and published authors who understand the power of their own stories. Position Summary The Americorps VISTA Book Builder publishes youth authors by assisting in the editing and design of manuscripts leading to a published book, as well as supporting in-class teachers, managers, and directors to ensure the highest level and quality of service to the greater Sacramento community. Please note that Americorps VISTA is a volunteer service position. You will not earn an hourly wage, but will be awarded a monthly stipend from Americorps for your service.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Manuscript Publishing Manuscript Review:

Regularly check digital manuscript to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Copyediting:

Copyedit student writing for publication according to 916 Ink's style guide.

Design & Layout:

Assist Publication Manager and Graphic Designer in finalizing the appearance of published books.

Book Release Organization:

Help plan and operate book release parties for youth writers.

Record Keeping Inventory:

Maintain an accurate inventory of published books and programming materials.

Student Records:

Organize and digitize student records. Assorted duties

Classroom Support:

Support teachers and students in a creative writing class.

Office Support:

Perform occasional in-office duties to support the management and directors in daily tasks.

Community Support:

Join the organization at community events to widen our support and reach communities we don't currently serve. Qualifications & Skills Minimum Requirements Must be at least 18 years of age This is an Americorps VISTA position, candidates must be able to commit to one year of service, averaging 40 hours per week of work. Previous experience in publishing or journalism preferred Provide evidence of ability to live/work in the United States Must satisfactorily pass criminal background and professional employment background checks Excellent verbal and written communication skills Must have ability to work a flexible, yet demanding schedule including nights and weekends Must be able to travel frequently

Physical Demands:

Standard working conditions involve sitting, standing, reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 40 lbs of books. Benefits & Perks Paid training in the 916 Ink workshop methodology.
