The Communications Editor will provide support services to the Clinical Center Critical Care Medicine Department within the National Institutes of Health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as research and editorial advisor to the Critical Care Medicine Department Carry out the development and completion of a variety of complex and difficult written materials, including fact sheets, news releases, brochures, feature stories, background statements and other materials in order to interpret the research and other programs of the Clinical Center Create PowerPoint presentation slides, graphics, charts, graphs, figures, scientific posters and manuscripts Scan slides, electrophoresis gel results, photos and journal figures for CCMD senior staff and fellows Create and maintain the departmental performance measure posters, departmental websites and the CCMD bibliography Edit scientific manuscripts written by scientists and other CCMD staff members for submission to professional journals; analyze manuscripts in terms of objective, style and manner of presentation; reorganize and revise as necessary Advise whether contributions submitted for publication fall within the scope and purpose of the periodical; discuss major changes with the author to suggest ways, means and techniques to improve material, including style and format Promote and maintain effective working relationships with CC staff in order to be able to disseminate the most important research information, accomplishments and goals Respond to inquiries for specific projects about multiple ongoing programs; ensure that the needs of individuals and groups are satisfied by providing counseling assistance and referrals to both local and national sources of social and medical assistance Serve as a research and editorial advisor to the CC Critical Care Medicine Department 1 Prepares written and electronic information documents for various audiences. Work products and documents related to editing scientific manuscripts submitted for submission to professional journals; analyze, reorganize and revise manuscripts; determine if contributions for publication fall within the scope and purpose of the periodical; discuss major changes. Work products and documents related to promoting and maintain relationships with staff; disseminate important research information, accomplishments and goals; respond to inquiries.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, General Medical and Health Services, or similar field of study. Advanced Skill level in the development of a variety of informational materials such as pamphlets, background summaries, fact sheets and communication approaches Ability to modify different research products into effective graphic presentations. In-depth knowledge of high-profile research periodicals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of the American Medical Association, and Critical Care in order to determine whether contributions submitted for publication fall within the scope and purpose of the periodical.
