Job Description

Consulting firm in Gaithersburg, MD, is looking for an experienced Science Editor/Writer with distinguished scientific/technical editing and writing experience. This position entails editing and writing a wide range of scientific, health, and environmental communication deliverables for technical and nontechnical audiences and collaborating closely with writers, subject matter experts, project managers, and other staff. Projects may include meeting summaries, newsletter and web content, strategic plans, fact sheets, scientific and technical materials, and other documents. The ideal candidate will have experience working in the science or health publications field. Additionally, the Scientific Editor/Writer must be able to— Provide substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading to ensure content is accurate, well structured, logically organized, consistent, and appropriate for the intended audience. Write sound scientific copy for a variety of materials and a range of audiences, from web articles for the general public to technical meeting summaries for researchers. Translate technical writing into concise, engaging material for diverse audiences, and the ability to follow plain language guidelines is a plus. Adhere to the detailed rules of different style guides (e.g., AP, GPO, client-specific), adapting quickly from one to another. Perform quality assurance/quality control reviews of written products and other deliverables. Required Qualifications M.S. or Ph.D. required in the sciences. At least 3+ years of scientific/technical editing and writing experience in the health and environmental fields. Diverse writing experience a plus (preparation of summaries, technical reports, articles, strategic plans, and other documents). Must be able to work in a team environment, as well as independently. Effective at managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. Thrives in a fast-paced environment with excellent time-management skills in meeting tight deadlines. Proficient with Microsoft Office (MS) products. Key to this role will be the quality of the written materials developed and the ability to work within deadlines and budgets. Preferred Qualifications Experience as a task manager or project manager. Scientific or medical editing certification. Strong science writer training or certification. Familiarity with content on cancer research, HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, environmental health issues, asthma, radon, translational research, or related scientific or public health topics. Proposal writing for contracting services, editing, and/or management/project management experience. Experience supporting federal government clients, particularly for the National Institutes of Health and/or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This position offers the ability to work remotely on a hybrid basis with a competitive compensation and benefits package.
