Work may be performed from the FHWA office in McLean, Virginia, a Washington, DC office, or another designated office, depending on Government requirements. The Technical Editors will serve as quality gatekeepers for technical reports, brochures, procedures, summaries, and other high-visibility documents. They will perform substantive and detailed editing, verify facts and references, and ensure complex technical content is clear, accurate, consistent, and ready for publication. Clearance and Suitability None. This is an unclassified position. The selected candidate must be able to successfully complete any required USDOT suitability processing and obtain a Government-issued Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential if required for facility or system access. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, or a related scientific or technical field. At least 3 years of professional experience in technical editing, technical writing, or documentation. Demonstrated experience editing complex technical documents for clarity, organization, grammar, consistency, and accuracy. Experience performing reference checking, fact checking, and quality control. Strong working knowledge of the GPO Style Manual or comparable formal editorial standards. Ability to work independently and manage documents from draft or outline through final publication. Ability to collaborate with engineers, researchers, developers, or other technical subject matter experts. Superior command of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and document organization. Desired Qualifications Transportation experience, particularly highway or surface transportation. Experience supporting Federal technical publications or research communications. Experience reviewing documents containing complex tables, figures, schematics, or technical data. Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, Section 508 accessibility, and copyright compliance. Experience with print, digital, or web publishing workflows. Key Responsibilities Edit technical brochures, standard operating procedures, research reports, technical summaries, and related documents. Perform substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, rewriting, and quality assurance. Improve document clarity, organization, logical flow, readability, and consistency. Verify references, facts, terminology, data, and copyright or permission requirements. Ensure tables, figures, schematics, and narrative text are integrated accurately and effectively. Apply the GPO Style Manual and other applicable agency editorial guidance. Coordinate revisions with authors, engineers, researchers, and Government reviewers. Manage assigned documents independently through review, approval, and final publication.
