Job Description

Overview Cladtec, a division of SAS Global Corporation, is a well-established leader in the design, metal fabrication, and manufacture of abrasion-resistant materials, hardfacing solutions, and high-performance equipment upgrades. Headquartered in, with major fabrication facilities in, and supported by global satellite locations, SAS serves a diverse range of industrial clients—from large enterprises to smaller operations. The company offers comprehensive in-house capabilities including custom material processing, heavy metal fabrication, engineering design, 3D laser scanning, CAD modeling, and rigorous quality control. Backed by over 50 patented technologies and proprietary materials, SAS focuses on wear resistance, process optimization, and innovative engineering solutions across industries such as power generation, mining, cement, pulp and paper, steel, waste-to-energy, glass, construction, automation, and automotive. The Metal Fabricator Designer/Estimator plays a vital role within this environment by preparing detailed fabrication drawings and accurate cost estimates for metal components and assemblies. This full-time, on-site position is based in and involves close collaboration with engineering, production, and sales teams to ensure project success from concept through manufacturing. Responsibilities Interpret engineering designs and specifications to develop detailed fabrication drawings using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks), including 2D and 3D modeling. Create and revise shop-ready drawings that include fabrication details, bills of materials (BOMs), weld symbols, GD&T annotations, and other technical documentation. Review customer specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements while maintaining quality standards. Perform material takeoffs and labor calculations for various metal components such as plates, structural steel, and wear-resistant parts. Develop accurate cost estimates by analyzing material costs, labor hours, manufacturing processes (cutting, forming, welding, machining), and other relevant factors. Generate proposals aligned with project scope and company standards to support sales efforts. Collaborate closely with engineering teams to clarify project scope and resolve design issues efficiently. Support production workflows by providing clear documentation and ensuring drawings meet safety and quality standards. Maintain document control systems for drawings and estimates while supporting continuous improvement initiatives in drafting and estimating processes. Qualifications Demonstrated proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks for creating fabrication drawings; experience with 3D modeling is preferred. Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings including weld symbols, GD&T specifications, blueprints for metal fabrication projects. Experience in estimating for metal fabrication projects involving material takeoffs, labor calculations, and cost analysis—especially for plates, structural steel components, or wear-resistant materials. Knowledge of industrial fabrication processes including cutting (plasma/laser), forming, welding (arc welding), machining (CNC), and assembly within heavy industry or wear-resistant applications. Strong analytical skills with the ability to balance technical detail with cost efficiency and manufacturability considerations. Effective communication skills to work collaboratively across engineering, production teams—and when clarifying customer requirements—ensuring smooth project execution. Proficiency with MS Office tools (Excel, Word) as well as ERP/MRP or job-costing systems for managing estimates and documentation. Relevant technical education such as an associate degree or certification in drafting or mechanical engineering technology; equivalent experience will also be considered. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to innovative projects within a leading organization dedicated to advanced wear-resistant solutions while utilizing your expertise in metal fabrication design and estimating.
