Historic Cannabis Magazine | Los Angeles | $5,000 Project Fee A Rare Creative Opportunity Head Magazine , an iconic cannabis magazine with roots going back to the 1970s, is preparing a special 50th Anniversary print issue — and we're looking for a talented Art Director to create its visual identity. This is not a routine magazine layout job. We are looking for someone with a strong creative eye who can help bring together 50 years of cannabis culture, history, photography, illustration, journalism and personality in a beautiful, cohesive print publication. The issue will have a retro, classic sensibility inspired by the magazine's original era , while still feeling fresh, sophisticated and relevant today.
THE ROLE
The Art Director will take the creative lead on the visual presentation of the anniversary issue, working directly with the publisher/editor to develop the overall look and feel and carry it through the publication.
Responsibilities will include:
Developing the overall visual concept and creative direction for the issue Designing and laying out articles and departments Creating a cohesive visual language across the magazine Working with typography, photography, illustration and archival material Designing section openers, feature pages and other special elements Helping determine how historic material can be presented in a fresh and compelling way Preparing layouts and files for professional print production Making revisions and refinements through the final production stage Contributing creative ideas beyond simply placing text and images on a page
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We're looking for a designer with a strong visual point of view who loves print and knows how to make a magazine feel like a magazine . You may be an experienced Art Director, an accomplished graphic designer ready to take on a major project, or an emerging designer with an exceptional portfolio and the confidence to lead a publication.
You should have:
Strong graphic design and typography skills Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator A portfolio demonstrating excellent layout and design An understanding of print production A strong sense of composition, type, image selection and visual storytelling The ability to work independently and meet deadlines Excellent communication and organizational skills A genuine interest in creative collaboration Magazine, editorial, publishing or print experience is a major plus. Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is creative, enthusiastic and excited by the opportunity to make something distinctive.
THE PROJECT
This is a project-based position for the 50th Anniversary print issue of Head Magazine.
Compensation:
$5,000 project fee The Art Director will work directly with the publisher/editor throughout the project. The exact production schedule will be discussed with the selected candidate. This is an opportunity to have your work associated with a historic publication and a significant anniversary issue — and to have substantial creative input into how that history is presented to a new generation.
