Job Description

Job Summary

Position Purpose

Works on engineering projects containing critical problems, the solution of which requires major technological advances and extensive related development. Guides successful completion of major engineering programs, or conceives research in areas of considerable scope and complexity supporting the development and production of company products and services.

Education & Experience Requirements

Required:

Bachelors degree in engineering or related curriculum applicable to the respective job position, or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience:

13 years in a specific technical discipline OR 15 years broad engineering experience in several technical disciplines with a Bachelors degree.

Note:

A separate section also lists 10 years in specific technical discipline or 15 years broad engineering experience with Bachelors.

Advanced Degree Credit:

Experience credit considered for related advanced degrees limited to 2 years for Masters and 4 years for PhD in fields applicable to this job.

Preferred:

Advanced degree in engineering or related curriculum. The level of technical skill and abilities appropriate for this grade will be established by each discipline.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Responsible for an entire engineering project of major complexity within established scope.

Makes technical decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have an important impact on extensive engineering activities.

Applies advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts based on broad expertise or unique specialized knowledge.

Leads the development of innovative principles and ideas.

Acts independently to determine improved methods and/or procedures to optimize technical product, cost, and schedule requirements.

Works under consultative direction; uses independent judgment to accomplish objectives.

Develops standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.

Conceives and plans investigation of broad areas of importance for which engineering precedents are lacking in areas critical to the program.

Selects appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to resolve complex engineering issues.

Is consulted extensively by associates and others as a recognized authority within the field.

Anticipates and resolves complex issues in creative and effective ways, developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.

Approach to problem solving balances technical product, cost, and schedule.

Works without appreciable direction; work is reviewed from a long-range perspective for desired results.

Exercises latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments, and makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative.

Additional Functions:

Maintains a current knowledge of developments in the field of specialty and/or other related aircraft fields in order to recommend innovations to improve quality and effectiveness of company product.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Core Responsibilities

Maintain type design definition of the aircraft by producing the form, fit, and function documentation.

Engage various engineering, manufacturing, and product support teams to complete designs.

Participate in design reviews.

Prepare engineering reports and presentations.

Provide mentoring to junior engineers when required.

Required Qualifications

Thorough understanding of structures and mechanical system design criteria including design loads and durability (fatigue and corrosion).

Solid understanding of design and manufacturing processes involved for both metallic and composite parts with a focus on design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).

Solid understanding of 3D Model Based Definition (3D MBD), and the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for details and assemblies.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency in

CATIA V5

workbenches: Part Design (machined parts), Sheet Metal, Composite Part Design (CPD), FT&A, Kinematics, Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) tools including use of parameters, design tables, and Visual Basic macros.

Proficiency in SmarTeam PLM database.

Prior work experience with company aircraft design.

Interim Attire:

Wear navy-blue shirt/t-shirt and blue work pants/shorts (no denim) prior to receiving uniforms.
