PM Benefits:
10 Days PTO, 7 Paid Holidays, Comprehensive Health Insurance Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Product Engineer specializing in Body Closures to lead the side door structures commodity (door sheet metal, hinges, check arms) for major vehicle programs. In this role, you will manage end-to-end component releases throughout the program lifecycle—from concept design and supplier engagement through prototype builds, validation testing, and production support. You will serve as the technical lead for side door assemblies, driving root-cause analysis and cross-functional problem-solving to ensure targets for quality, cost, weight, and timing are met. Key Responsibilities Manage component release and BOM tracking for side door structures, hinges, and check arms across the full product development lifecycle. Apply Global Product Development System (GPDS) processes and Engineering Robustness Disciplines (FMEA, P-Diagrams, Quality History). Utilize 8D and Six Sigma DMAIC methodologies to identify root causes and implement technical solutions via tracking systems like AIMS and JIRA. Create and update BOM data (FEDEBOM / AVBOM / WERS) to ensure correct part levels for prototype builds through post-launch. Develop Engineering Statements of Work (ESOW), participate in supplier sourcing, and partner with Supplier Technical Assistance (STA) teams. Pull, review, and modify 3D CAD models (CATIA / 3DX / Teamcenter) to evaluate packaging and propose design solutions. Read and interpret CAE reports (sheet metal stamping feasibility, door durability, door sag) to guide design iterations. Define Design Validation Plans (DVP) for validation, durability, and functional testing per corporate standards. Present technical progress and engineering proposals during Technical Design Reviews (TDR) with upper management. Provide on-site assembly plant support during prototype builds, launch milestones, and ongoing production quality resolutions (VQR/VRT/PVT).
Required Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Experience:
2+ years of direct experience with Body Closures engineering, specifically focused on side door assemblies and opening/closing mechanisms.
CAD & Data Management:
Proficiency in CATIA and/or 3DX for 3D modeling, along with experience using Teamcenter CAD repositories.
BOM Systems:
Working knowledge of automated Bill of Materials release and tracking tools (AVBOM, WERS, or equivalent systems).
Engineering Principles:
Solid foundation in mechanics of materials (steel/aluminum), statics, dynamics, and primary sheet metal manufacturing processes like stamping.
Problem Solving:
Hands-on experience applying Six Sigma DMAIC or 8D frameworks for root-cause analysis.
CAE Analysis:
Ability to interpret CAE simulation data related to structural integrity, door sag, and durability.
Software:
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) for technical analysis and executive design reviews. Preferred Qualifications Experience with additional closures commodities (liftgates, tailgates, moveable glass, dynamic sealing, or moonroofs). Leadership experience driving cross-functional teams across manufacturing, purchasing, finance, and CAD. Exposure to 3D printing capabilities for quick-turn proof-of-concept modeling. Strong project management and change management skills to maintain deliverable schedules within cost and weight constraints. Responsibilities Lead the mechanical design and development of body closure systems and side doors utilizing CAD software such as SolidWorks and Creo, ensuring precise 3D modeling and detailed mechanical drawings. Conduct tolerance analysis and mechanical detail drafting to optimize manufacturing processes and ensure component fitment and functionality. Perform root cause analysis on design or manufacturing issues related to body closures, implementing corrective actions effectively. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management to align product development goals. Develop schematics, technical specifications, and mechanical schematics adhering to ASME codes & standards for safety and reliability. Utilize engineering tools such as FEA (Finite Element Analysis), GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), and building information modeling (BIM) tools to validate designs. Manage project schedules from concept through production launch, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining quality standards. Support manufacturing teams by providing technical guidance on machine design, CNC programming, and assembly processes. Apply knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Arduino platforms, MATLAB, and other automation tools for testing or process improvements. Engage in continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing manufacturing data and implementing innovative solutions using quantum engineering principles where applicable. Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are a plus. Proven experience practicing in an industrial or manufacturing engineering role focused on automotive or similar heavy machinery sectors. Demonstrated expertise in mechanical product development projects involving body closure systems or similar components. Extensive proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, along with drafting standards like GD&T. Strong background in mechanical design, machine design, tolerance analysis, and mechanical detail drawings aligned with ASME standards. Familiarity with manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal forming, assembly techniques, and quality control protocols. Experience integrating programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Arduino systems, MATLAB simulations, or similar automation platforms into product testing or process automation. Skilled in project scheduling, root cause analysis, risk management, and cross-functional communication to ensure project success. If you possess a passion for innovative automotive engineering and thrive in a collaborative environment dedicated to excellence in product development, we encourage you to apply today. Join us in shaping the future of vehicle safety and design through cutting-edge engineering solutions.
