Overview Monday - Friday 8am- 12pm. Serves as medical interpreter for patients and staff by providing timely, thorough, and accurate medical and general interpretation between Spanish-speaking patients/families and staff or physicians in a wide variety of settings and specialty areas in adherence with the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics adopted by the department. Coordinates translation of written documents both medical and general into target language of Spanish. Assists with mentoring volunteer LEP Ambassadors. Utilizes on-line computer systems such as Outlook, Word and Epic. Assists with education to clinicians; special projects as assigned.
NOTE:
This is a fast-paced environment, with frequently changing priorities. Physically demanding with a lot of walking and standing time. Emotionally challenging, as some interactions may be highly stressful.
Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree. Demonstrated fluency in medical Spanish. Experience as a Spanish interpreter in a medical setting. Must demonstrate fluency both oral and written in English and Spanish including medical vocabulary. General knowledge of cultural backgrounds of this LEP patient population; strong writing skills and understanding of translation process. Experience in health care setting, with formal training/certification in interpretation/translation preferred. Must achieve national certification within first twelve months of employment. (Completion of The Weill Cornell Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter Training or equivalent plus NCIHC certification.)
Motor Vehicle Operator Designation:
Employees in this position: Will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose
NOTE:
A frequent driver is defined as one who uses his/her personal or Shands automobile a) at least once daily, b) at least five individual trips per week or c) drives, on average, over 150 miles per week in the performance of his/her job.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
NCIHC Certification within 12 months of hire
