JOB SUMMARY

Assist teachers in providing access to communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing to maximize the educational opportunities available within the school community. This position involves interpreting classroom instruction and facilitating communication between students and teachers within the classroom and other school-based settings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health through the Iowa Board of Sign Language Interpreters and Transliterators, or willing to work with the district to obtain conditional licensure through the Iowa Department of Public Health with demonstration of a base-level sign language proficiency. Previous experience working with children is preferred but not required Post-secondary coursework in educational field is preferred but not required Initiative to be a self-starter Intuitive to the needs of the student Ability to work collaboratively with the classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA, and parents of the student, as part of the student's educational team Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise Ability to use basic office equipment May be assigned other related duties in addition to those listed above

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific associate position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis Maintain confidentiality Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees Facilitate all communication in a variety of environments and Foster and encourage student independence Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, social interactions with students and teachers, and school activities. Plan with teacher to prepare for interpreting. Assist in the implementation and monitoring of students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs) Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment Participate in IEP meetings to provide team critical information about appropriate supportive communication strategies throughout the student's school day Assist in accurate documentation related to student communication Perform other activities as required by building principal or teachers Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.
