TITLE:
Educational Interpreter (Level 1, 2 or 3 depends on qualifications listed below)
QUALIFICATIONS
for Level 1
Pay:
High school diploma or equivalent required Some experience interpreting in an educational setting or working with the deaf community with supporting documentation preferred Temporary license from the Kentucky Board of Interpreters (KBI) Actively working with a mentor to achieve full licensure

Level II Pay:
Temporary license from Kentucky Board of Interpreters Actively working with a mentor to achieve full licensure Holds Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree preferably from an Interpreter Training Program
QUALIFICATIONS

Level III Pay:
Full licensure from the Kentucky Board of Interpreters Willingness to serve as a mentor for interpreters without full licensure
REPORTS TO
Assistant Superintendent, Executive Director, or designee
JOB GOAL
Apply ASL interpreting, English transliterating and/or other communication modalities to facilitate communication in the educational environment and to ensure access to information and maximum learning between students who are hearing impaired and faculty, staff, and other students.
DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS
Serve as an integral member of the educational team serving students who are hearing impaired in the educational environment according to the specifications of the student's individualized educational program (IEP). This environment includes the classroom laboratory, field trip, assembly, and other educational sites that are deemed appropriate for student learning.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English or other recognized modes of communication with the deaf and hard of hearing community Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary Kentucky Core Content and Program of Studies Applicable sections of the law, including Kentucky Administrative Regulations Special education, language development of, and effective strategies for educating students with hearing loss Values, behavior, and language of the American Deaf culture NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
ABILITY TO
Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality (ASL, Signed English, etc.) and from the IEP specified modality to spoken English Facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and faculty, staff, and other students Implement knowledge of the field of interpreting Relate well to hearing impaired individuals Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others Provide instructional staff with relevant information regarding student's functional abilities in the classroom Communicate effectively orally, in writing, and across the signing continuum Work independently with little direction Maintain current knowledge of school rules, regulations, requirements, and restrictions
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Use recognized interpreting and/or transliterating skills to facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and faculty, staff,administrators, students, and others Attend and interpret the educational environment including but not limitedto classrooms, laboratories, field trips, assemblies, meetings, conferences, graduation ceremonies, sports practices, school-sponsored extra-curricular activities, and all other educational opportunities provided to students Interpret into spoken English the questions and verbal presentations of deafand hard of hearing students Allow deaf and hard of hearing students to communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and others Interpret at meetings, conferences, appointments, and during othereducational activities Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successfulinterpreting and/or transliterating Perform other duties as assigned that do not interfere with the community and accessibility of assigned students
