Duties Provide accurate and culturally sensitive American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for tactile and protactile communication methods, ensuring clarity and precision. Facilitate interpretation across multiple platforms, including in-person engagements, over-the-phone interpretation (OPI), and virtual sessions. Conduct simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during educational, medical, legal, or community interactions to support seamless communication flow. Adapt interpretation techniques to meet the unique needs of clients requiring tactile or protactile ASL, ensuring accessibility for individuals with varying levels of hearing loss. Maintain professional ethics by respecting client confidentiality, demonstrating cultural competency, and adhering to industry standards. Collaborate with clients, caregivers, and other professionals to understand specific communication preferences and requirements. Document and evaluate interpretation sessions when necessary to ensure quality standards are met. Qualifications Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), with specialized knowledge of tactile and protactile communication methods. Multilingual abilities are a plus; familiarity with additional languages enhances versatility. Demonstrated experience in interpretation across diverse settings such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal environments, or community events. Strong understanding of interpretation techniques including simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. Excellent communication skills combined with cultural competency to serve diverse populations effectively. Knowledge of professional ethics standards within the interpreting field. Ability to work independently as a freelancer while managing multiple assignments efficiently. Educational background or certification in interpretation or linguistics is preferred; ongoing professional development is encouraged.
