INTERPRETER FOR THE DEAF JOB DESCRIPTION
To facilitate the conveyance of information to and from Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, employees and parents including concrete information and the social and emotional content of information.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation: Operates in a manner commensurate with students' age, maturity and academic abilities. Interprets the locations and times designated and makes adjustments to scheduling as requested to meet students', employees' and/or parents' needs. Refers questions and concerns regarding Deaf/Hard of Hearing students to appropriate program personnel or to school officials. Assumes position for interpreting to allow clients to see both the speaker and the interpreter. Provides directions and materials for substitute interpreters. Uses appropriate signing methodologies to ensure the most comprehensive understanding for the majority of Deaf/Hard of hearing students in the classroom. Voices for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, employees and/or parents as appropriate. Participates in IEP meetings as requested by Deaf/Hard of Hearing program personnel. Assumes additional responsibilities to support the mission of the district as appropriateDuties:
All duties are standard and apply to all Albuquerque Public Schools employees. Duties cannot be changed or altered. Employees are not screened based on duties. Complies with state-approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession, APS employee handbook, employment contract and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations. Articulates and facilitates the implementation of the mission and values of the Albuquerque Public Schools. Safeguards confidentiality of privileged information. Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records and reports as required by law, state directives, District policy and administrative regulations. Shares the responsibility for the supervision and care of District inventory, proper and safe use of facilities, equipment and supplies, and reports safety hazards promptly. Maintains professional relationships and works cooperatively with employees, the community and other professionals. Maintains professional competence through District mandated, individual and staff training, in-service educational activities and self-selected professional growth activities. Attends and/or conducts staff meetings and participates on committees within areas of responsibility. Performs other tasks related to area of responsibilities as requested or assigned by an immediate supervisor.PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone. Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate the work of others. Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, child abuse/neglect and substance abuse. Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and other staff members.REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree. Valid NM Interpreting Community or Educational License throughNMRLD OR
Provisional Interpreting License through NMRLD with an EIPA Performance >4.0 Must have an NMPED Interpreter for the Deaf PreK-12 license OR begin the application for completing the hiring process.CONTACT INFORMATION
