Job Description

Posting Details The New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides effective leadership, education, advocacy, and programs to reduce barriers to the social, economic, educational, cultural, and intellectual well-being of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind New Mexicans and their families, friends, and colleagues.

Why does the job exist? This position provides interpreting services for NMCDHH staff members, coordinate communication access for the agency, supervise and mentor interpreter apprentices. Additionally, this position will manage projects to develop improved communication within the agency, increase the pool of qualified interpreters in New Mexico, and increase communication access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities throughout New Mexico. How does it get done? Interpret for NMCDHH staff members and clients, coordinate services by receiving and filling interpreter requests with contractors and agencies, maintain clear records of interpreting work Provide professional development opportunities for interpreter apprentices and the interpreting community Create opportunities to increase communication between Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing staff members Who are the customers? NMCDHH staff and individuals who are Deaf, Deaf Blind, and Hard of Hearing as well as agencies, organizations, and hearing individuals. Ideal Candidate NMCDHH staff and individuals who are Deaf, Deaf Blind, and Hard of Hearing as well as agencies, organizations, and hearing individuals. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree, maintain current Community Signed Language Interpreter License from the New Mexico Signed Language Interpreting Practices Board, maintain current certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and two (2) years' post-certification experience as an interpreter. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field, above licensure/certification requirements, and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and a New Mexico Community Signed Language Interpreter License, plus a valid Driver's License and State of New Mexico Defensive Driving Certificate. Working Conditions Office setting and meetings with clients in a variety of settings. Exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and VideoPhone usage. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Some statewide travel may be required with possible overnight stays. Supplemental Information Do you know what Total Compensation is? Click here
