Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Freelance American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to facilitate clear and accurate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and English-speaking parties. As a Freelance ASL Interpreter, you will leverage your linguistic expertise and cultural competency to bridge communication gaps, ensuring accessibility and understanding for all involved. Duties Provide accurate interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa across various settings such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal proceedings, or community events. Conduct simultaneous interpretation during live conversations or presentations to facilitate real-time communication. Perform consecutive interpretation by listening carefully, then translating speech into ASL during pauses or breaks in conversation. Offer over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) services for remote clients requiring immediate language assistance. Maintain confidentiality and adhere strictly to professional ethics and standards of impartiality throughout all interpreting assignments. Demonstrate cultural competency by understanding diverse backgrounds and adapting communication styles accordingly. Collaborate with clients to ensure clarity of messages and provide translation or clarification when necessary. Skills Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong proficiency in English, including advanced interpretation skills. Multilingual abilities are a plus, enabling effective interpretation across multiple languages and cultures. Deep understanding of interpretation techniques such as simultaneous, consecutive, and educational interpretation. Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey messages clearly and accurately under various circumstances. Strong knowledge of professional ethics related to confidentiality, impartiality, and respectful interaction. Cultural competency to navigate diverse social contexts sensitively and effectively. Background in linguistics or translation enhances the quality of interpretation services provided. Experience with over-the-phone interpretation platforms is preferred but not mandatory; training can be provided for suitable candidates.
