Job Description

ORGANIZATION
Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a nonprofit organization providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care to asylum seekers, refugees, and other survivors of human rights abuses and forced displacement. Language access is a core part of PTR's commitment to dignity, equity, and effective care.
POSITION PTR
engages interpreters as independent contractors to support clear, accurate, and culturally responsive communication between clients and service providers. Interpreters play a vital role in facilitating access to trauma-informed services while maintaining professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards. This is a 1099 independent contractor role. Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis, with no guarantee of hours. Contractors may accept or decline assignments at their discretion. The primary organizational contact for this role is the Partnerships and Community Outreach Manager.
SCOPE OF SERVICES
Interpreters may provide services in the following areas, depending on assignment needs and contractor availability: Interpretation & Translation Services Provide professional interpretation services for PTR sessions, meetings, and events (primarily consecutive; occasional simultaneous as appropriate). Provide remote interpretation via phone or secure video platforms (e.g., Zoom Health) and/or in-person interpretation as requested. Translate finalized written materials (e.g., outreach materials, forms) as requested. Professional Collaboration & Communication Coordinate with PTR staff regarding availability, logistics, and assignment details. Participate in professional feedback exchanges related to interpretation services. Communicate in a timely and professional manner regarding assignments. Administrative Responsibilities Track time spent on interpretation and translation services. Submit detailed monthly invoices in accordance with PTR invoicing guidelines.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Native or fully fluent in the working language(s) and English. Demonstrated ability to accurately convey meaning, tone, and intent between languages. Strong listening, concentration, and communication skills. Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics. Cultural humility and respect for diverse identities and experiences. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Reliable, timely, and organized. Willingness to ask for clarification when needed and to communicate limitations. Ability to engage in work that may involve exposure to emotionally intense or traumatic content.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
(NOT
REQUIRED
) Prior experience interpreting in mental health, healthcare, social services, or community-based settings. Interpreter training certificate and/or professional certification. Cultural familiarity with communities that speak the working language(s). Experience working with displaced, immigrant, refugee, or under-resourced communities. Comfort using basic digital tools (e.g., email, shared documents, spreadsheets).
