GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB
The Interpretation Services Representative facilitates understanding in communication between families, patients, health care providers, and hospital personnel who speak different languages. The medical interpreter skills should include cultural competency and respect for everyone involved, as well as mastery of medical and colloquial terminology, which make possible the mutual trust and accurate communication that lead to effective provision of health care. The Interpretation Services Representative is responsible for accurately translating written health care information for Spanish speaking families, health care providers, and hospital personnel.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
- Interprets medical/health care information and instructions from English into Spanish for Spanish- speaking patients and families.
- Interprets questions of Spanish-speaking families to physicians and other health care personnel.
- Sight translation for consents, protocols, discharge orders, etc. from English into Spanish and vice versa.
- Translates into Spanish, proofreads and edits in a timely manner, written health care information performed in house.
- Proofreads written health care information in Spanish received from a contract agency.
- Facilitates a good flow of the translations and interpretations requested, prioritizing according to the urgency or situation Sensitizes hospital employees to specialized healthcare needs of Hispanic/Latino patients and their families.
- Maintains an accurate database of each encounter handled by Interpretation Services.
- Provides manager/director with reports on an as-needed basis.
- Participates in departmental meetings.
- Participates in process improvement.
- Generates suggestions for improving work processes.
- Demonstrates the ability to use computer/software applications required for the job.
- Utilizes resources and information to support the patient as needed.
- Will occasionally drive for Driscoll Children's Hospital business.
- Must have reliable transportation.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) or associates degree or equivalent preferred. Must have familiarity with basic medical terminology in Spanish and English Until all children are well. Driscoll Children's Hospital and its specialty centers, urgent care centers, and after-hours facility serve a vast area covering 31 South Texas counties.
