Job Description
Sign Language Interpreter for School Districts Are you fluent in American Sign Language and have a passion for supporting students with instructional needs? We're looking for Sign Language Interpreters to serve Deaf and hard-of-hearing students with behavioral needs across K-12 school settings in Suffolk County Public Schools for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond. Your language skills aren't just a bonus here — they're the bridge between a student and their ability to fully access education.

Partnership with National University that provides a 15% tuition discount Free RBT Certification pathway — our 40-hour Last Mile Training program with hands-on supervision gets you credentialed at no cost to you What You'll Do You'll support deaf and hard-of-hearing students with interpretation services: 1:1 Student Support Accompany a specific student throughout their school day, using ASL to provide continuous behavioral and academic support tailored to their individual goals. General Classroom Support Work alongside a lead teacher to assist multiple students in a structured classroom, using ASL to facilitate communication, comprehension, and behavioral redirection in real time. Day-to-day responsibilities include : Interpret for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom and school settings, including lectures, discussions, directions, and school events Support student participation by facilitating communication between students, teachers, and peers, including answering and asking questions Prepare for lessons by reviewing instructional materials, videos, and vocabulary to ensure accurate and effective interpretation Assist teachers in creating accessible, visually supportive learning environments, including optimal seating and use of visual aids Provide small group or individual instruction to reinforce academic concepts using teacher-directed materials Support oral language development and use of instructional tools and resources Monitor student progress and support IEP goals in collaboration with teachers Interpret during meetings, events, and between staff, students, and parents Promote life skills, social skills, and positive behavior Assist with classroom tasks, materials, and student supervision Perform other related duties as assignedRequirements:
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods (e.g., PSE, SEE) Passing score on an approved interpreting assessment (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), or equivalent) Preferred EIPA score of 3.5+ (Level 3 or higher) Candidates with an EIPA score of 2.4+ or Level 2 may be considered if willing to reassess and improve scores Ability to accurately interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa in real time Knowledge of Deaf culture and effective communication practices High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in ASL, Interpreting, or related field preferred Strong attention to detail, listening, and cognitive processing skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and families Physical stamina to sustain active interpreting (repetitive hand/arm movement, visual focus)Preferred:
