Job Summary The Theatre Technician is a versatile member of the production team responsible for supporting all technical aspects of theatrical productions, concerts, live events, educational programming, rentals, and facility operations at The Garfield Theatre and other designated venues. This position performs a wide range of technical duties involving lighting, audio, video, rigging, scenic construction, painting, backstage operations, and facility support while providing exceptional customer service to internal departments, guest artists, rental clients, and patrons. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical proficiency across multiple production disciplines, excellent communication skills, a commitment to safety, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment. Duties Support the setup, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and strike of technical equipment for theatrical productions, concerts, lectures, meetings, rentals, community events, and special events. Install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and assist with programming theatrical lighting, audio, video, and projection systems, including ETC lighting control systems and Ion consoles, Yamaha digital mixing consoles, wired and wireless microphones, portable and small PA systems, playback and presentation systems, and Mac/PC-based multimedia equipment. Hang, circuit, address, focus, and strike lighting instruments; maintain lighting fixtures, dimmers, cables, connectors, and related electrical equipment; and diagnose and repair basic lighting and electrical issues. Read and interpret lighting plots, electrical drawings, production paperwork, construction drawings, CAD/shop drawings, schematics, and technical plans. Support scenic construction, repair, modification, installation, and removal using wood, metal, plastics, and other theatrical materials. Perform scenic painting, including base coats, textures, faux finishes, and other theatrical finishing techniques. Install, operate, and maintain theatrical rigging and stage machinery, including counterweight fly systems, curtains, wagons, scenic automation, and special effects equipment such as haze and fog systems. Assist with rigging inspections and routine maintenance. Participate in production l oad-ins, rehearsals, performances, changeovers, load-outs, and strikes, providing technical and backstage support as assigned. Serve as a member of the backstage running crew; execute scene changes; assist with props movement and presets; follow cues from the Stage Manager and Technical Director; and maintain safe backstage traffic flow and communication. Safely operate hand and power tools, lifts, ladders, and shop equipment, and perform routine facility maintenance related to technical operations. Maintain technical equipment, tools, workspaces, storage areas, inventories, production paperwork, and equipment records in a clean, organized, and safe condition, including proper equipment storage and cable management. Provide courteous, professional technical support and customer service to internal users, guest artists, rental clients, volunteers, and visiting production personnel while supporting facility rentals and community events. Participate in emergency response procedures, facility safety initiatives, staff and production meetings, and required training. Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by production and facility schedules. Perform other duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. Requirements Minimum of two (2) years of experience in one or more theatrical production disciplines, including lighting, audio, video, carpentry, rigging, or stage operations. Working knowledge of theatrical lighting, electrical distribution, audio systems, projection, video playback, and presentation systems. Experience operating ETC lighting consoles and Yamaha digital audio consoles (MC7L or similar). Experience with counterweight rigging, backstage operations, Genie lifts, and scissor lifts preferred. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment. Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, lighting and stage plots, schematics, construction drawings, and other production paperwork. Strong organizational, communication, customer service, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint on Windows and Mac platforms. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Valid California Driver License with an acceptable driving record. Ability to successfully pass State, Federal, and Live Scan background checks.
