PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The Scenic and Technical Director is responsible for coordinating and managing the operational aspects of the Center of The Arts performance facilities with a primary focus on the technical infrastructure, systems, and equipment for any required scenic, staging, or properties needs. This position oversees appropriate operation and maintenance of all related equipment and provides technical support and expertise in the use of scenic elements, staging pieces, stage and event space operations, and construction tools and equipment for live performances and events.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Plan, coordinate, and execute scenic, staging, backstage, and related technical operations across all Center for the Arts performance venues, including the Recital Hall, Black Box Theater, Main Stage Theater, Bosque Gallery, and Amphitheater, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, operational standards, and maintaining venue readiness for productions and events Provide operational oversight for Scene Shop functions, including coordinating workflow, personnel assignments, equipment and facility use, production schedules, material and supply inventories, and workplace safety compliance Contribute as an active member of the production team by building strong working relationships, facilitating effective communication, and collaborating with directors, faculty, staff, performers, and crew to ensure successful production outcomes Foster a culture of safety and operational excellence by collaborating with faculty and staff to establish and promote best practices in Scene Shop operations, ensuring student safety, skill development, and success in the use of tools, equipment, and theatrical production processes Collaborate with directors, faculty, staff, performers, and venue users to coordinate and support scenic, staging, backstage, and venue operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective execution of rehearsals, productions, performances, special events, and venue readiness Coordinate and oversee technical rehearsals and stage operations, ensuring the safe use of performance venues, sets, props, fly systems, and rigging; communicate procedures and production requirements to performers and crew; and ensure the proper care, maintenance, and storage of theatrical properties and equipment Analyze scripts, research production requirements, and develop technical construction/fabrication concepts; create and present any necessary production documentation such as technical drawings, drafting, or instructional needs; manage the construction, sourcing and acquisition of props and scenic elements in support of performances and events Act as the scenic and/or property designer for live performances and events as needed. Create and provide any needed visual representations and paperwork to facilitate the completion of any design work. Ensure all design materials needed are on time and meet the Center of the Arts production expectations Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Technical expertise in theatrical construction, scenic fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance for productions and events Working knowledge of construction methods, hand and power tools, theatrical rigging and fly systems, and applicable fire, life-safety, and workplace safety standards Knowledge of safety protocols, operational standards, and best practices related to Scene Shop and production operations Knowledge of scenic design and production planning, including script analysis, research, renderings, drafting, technical documentation, and production execution Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines Ability to supervise, train, and mentor staff and students Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, other general office equipment, scanner, point of sale machine, and state of the art lighting equipment and sound equipment Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position Work is performed in a climate-controlled theater environment with exposure to safety hazards typical with use of theater production equipment and tools Extended work hours, including nights and weekends, may be required during peak production times
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Theatrical Technical Direction or a related field, or significant professional experience beyond the minimum required experience Experience with theatrical rigging and fly systems Experience with basic hand and machine sewing techniques Salary Hiring salary range is $51,761 - $59,526 Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
