Rigging Theater Full Job Description Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Technical Director to join our team. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of our productions, ensuring that every show is executed with professionalism and creativity. The Technical Director will work closely with the Executive Director, production staff, and volunteers to bring each performance to life, providing leadership and guidance on all matters related to lighting, sound, set design, building maintenance, and stage management.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Management:
Oversee the technical execution of all theatre productions, including lighting, sound, set construction, and stage operations. Ensure that all technical needs are met within the parameters of the production budget and timeline.
Collaboration:
Work alongside the Executive Director and production team to interpret and implement the artistic vision for each show. Attend production meetings and provide technical input.
Team Leadership:
Lead and manage technical crews, including stagehands, electricians, sound technicians, carpenters, and volunteers. Provide guidance, training, and supervision during rehearsals and performances.
Set Design & Construction:
Work with the set designer to ensure that the design is feasible with the available resources. Oversee the construction, installation, and maintenance of sets, props, and other production elements.
Lighting & Sound:
Oversee lighting and sound design and implementation, ensuring that all technical elements meet the production's creative and logistical needs. Operate or supervise the operation of lighting and sound boards during performances.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure that all technical operations meet safety regulations and industry standards. Maintain equipment and infrastructure in good working order and troubleshoot technical issues during rehearsals and performances.
Budget & Resource Management:
Help manage the technical aspects of the production budget, track expenses, and ensure cost-effective solutions. Assist in maintaining inventory of all technical equipment and supplies.
Technical Support:
Provide technical support for rehearsals, opening nights, and performances. Respond quickly to any issues that arise during production and ensure smooth operations.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years in a technical theatre role or a bachelor's degree in theatre with a solid understanding of set design, lighting, sound, and stage management.
Technical Expertise:
Proficiency in lighting, sound, and rigging systems. Familiarity with stagecraft techniques, power tools, and construction methods. Experience with CAD software, QLab, or other technical design tools is a plus.
Leadership Skills:
Strong leadership and team management skills. Ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and artists in a collaborative and creative environment.
Problem Solving:
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to remain calm and resourceful under pressure during live performances.
Communication:
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical team members and volunteers.
Physical Stamina:
Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects, and work in a physically demanding environment, including working at heights and in dark or confined spaces.
Preferred Qualifications:
A degree or equivalent experience in theatre, technical theatre, theatre production, or a related field. Experience in community or volunteer-driven environments. Knowledge of current trends and best practices in technical theatre and theatre technology.
