Norfolk State University, an NCAA Division I institution and member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Sports Performance. The Assistant Director of Sports Performance will assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive sports performance programs designed to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and support the health and development of Norfolk State University student-athletes. Reporting to the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance, this position will have primary responsibility for Men's Basketball and two assigned Olympic sport programs while supporting the overall operation of the Sports Performance unit. The successful candidate will collaborate with coaches, sports medicine, athletic training, nutrition, analytics, and other student-athlete support areas to provide an integrated approach to student-athlete performance. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in collegiate strength and conditioning, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a commitment to student-athlete health, safety, and development. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Design, implement, coach, and evaluate comprehensive strength and conditioning programs for Men's Basketball and assigned Olympic sport programs. Develop sport-specific and periodized programs incorporating strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, mobility, flexibility, and recovery. Conduct performance testing and assessments and utilize appropriate data and technology to monitor student-athlete development and inform training decisions. Collaborate with sports medicine and athletic training personnel regarding injury-risk reduction, rehabilitation, return-to-training, and return-to-performance protocols within the appropriate scope of practice. Work collaboratively with head coaches, sports medicine, nutrition, analytics, and other members of the student-athlete support team to support an integrated high-performance environment. Provide instruction and supervision to ensure proper exercise technique, safe lifting and spotting practices, and appropriate use of sports performance facilities and equipment. Maintain accurate training records, testing results, performance data, attendance records, and other required documentation for assigned student-athletes and teams. Coordinate offseason, preseason, in-season, postseason, and summer training programs for assigned teams and travel with teams when required. Assist with the daily operation, safety, maintenance, and organization of sports performance facilities and with the supervision and development of interns, graduate assistants, student workers, and other assigned personnel. Assist the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance with departmental planning, professional development, educational programming, and other duties necessary to support the overall goals of Norfolk State Athletics. Compliance Responsibilities The Assistant Director of Sports Performance is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with Norfolk State University, Commonwealth of Virginia, NCAA, MEAC, and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. The successful candidate is expected to promote student-athlete health and safety, institutional integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct and to report any known or suspected rules violations through appropriate institutional channels. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science, or a related field from an accredited institution. Minimum of three years of relevant collegiate strength and conditioning or sports performance experience. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing comprehensive strength and conditioning programs for collegiate student-athletes. Current Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) certification through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa). Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or ability to obtain required certification within the timeframe established by the University. Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations applicable to student-athlete health, safety, and strength and conditioning activities. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sport programs and work collaboratively with coaches, sports medicine personnel, administrators, and other members of a multidisciplinary performance team. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to meet the physical and scheduling demands of collegiate athletics, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and team travel. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Sports Science, Strength and Conditioning, or a related field. Five or more years of collegiate sports performance or strength and conditioning experience, with NCAA Division I experience preferred. Experience serving as the primary sports performance or strength and conditioning coach for a collegiate Men's Basketball program. Experience utilizing performance monitoring technology, testing protocols, data collection, and performance analytics to inform training decisions. Experience working within an integrated high-performance model and supervising or mentoring graduate assistants, interns, student workers, or other sports performance personnel. The salary range from $55,000.00-$65,000.00
