The Yuma Sun is seeking a Temporary Sports Writer/Photographer to help cover local high school and community sports in Yuma County. This is a hands-on journalism position for someone who enjoys sports, photography and telling the stories of local athletes, coaches and teams. The position will include game coverage, feature stories, photography and digital/social media content. Responsibilities Cover local high school and community sporting events. Write game stories, features, athlete profiles and other sports-related content. Photograph games, athletes, coaches and community sporting events. Develop relationships with coaches, athletic directors, athletes and other local sports contacts. Help identify interesting people and stories beyond game results and scores. Provide timely coverage for print, online and social media. Work with editors and other newsroom staff to coordinate coverage. Contribute ideas for expanded sports coverage, including photos, video, social media and other digital content. Attend games and events throughout Yuma County as assigned. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who is dependable, curious and comfortable talking with people in the community. Previous journalism or professional photography experience is helpful, but we will also consider candidates with strong writing, photography or sports knowledge who are interested in developing their journalism skills.

Candidates should:

Have strong writing and communication skills. Have an interest in local sports and community journalism. Be comfortable photographing sporting events. Be able to work independently and meet deadlines. Be available for evening and weekend assignments when games and events are scheduled. Have reliable transportation and the ability to travel to assignments throughout the Yuma area. Be comfortable working with computers, smartphones and digital publishing tools. Understand that accuracy, fairness and professionalism are essential when representing the Yuma Sun in the community. Position Details This is a temporary position based in Yuma, Arizona. The schedule will vary depending on the local sports calendar and will include nights and weekends.
