Job Description
Sports Reporter - Nelson Media Company Nelson Media Company is seeking sports reporters to join our growing team and help provide outstanding coverage of high school athletics across Iowa. Nelson Media Company operates 11 community newspapers, including 10 in Iowa and one in Wisconsin. Our sports reporters play an important role in making sure local athletes, teams, coaches and schools receive the coverage they deserve. Responsibilities Cover high school sports throughout the school year Attend games, meets, tournaments and other athletic events Write game stories, features, previews and other sports content Interview coaches, athletes and others connected to local programs Take photos at sporting events when needed Develop relationships with coaches, athletic directors and schools Provide timely coverage while meeting publication deadlines Help identify compelling stories beyond game results and statistics Coverage Reporters may cover one school or multiple schools depending on location, experience and availability. Coverage opportunities are available throughout Iowa and may include football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, bowling, track and field, golf, soccer, baseball, softball and other high school athletics. Qualifications Previous sports writing, newspaper or journalism experience is strongly preferred Strong writing, interviewing and communication skills Knowledge of high school sports Ability to work independently and meet deadlines Reliable transportation for attending local sporting events Photography experience is a plus Understanding of AP style and journalism standards is preferred Dependability and a genuine interest in local sports and community journalism Position This position offers flexibility based on the reporter's location and availability. Reporters may be assigned to a specific school or cover several schools within a geographic area. We are looking for people who enjoy high school athletics and understand that great local sports coverage is about more than scores.
